Objectives: A large number of patients require psychiatric therapy. We attempted to determine the present situation regarding psychotherapy and neuropsychological tests for dementia in Korean medicine for the benefit of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS). The aim of this study was to aware of the current status about psychotherapy and neuropsychological test for dementia in Korean medicine. Methods: We searched the medical practice records for psychotherapy and neuropsychological tests in oriental neuropsychiatry between 2009 and 2013 using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS) database. The search categories were: IJeongByunGi (Medical practice code:59001), JiUnGoRoen (59002), Kyungjapyungji (59003), OhJiSangSeung (59004), neuropsychological test for dementia (29005). Results: 1. The number of patients treated with Korean Medical Psychotherapy increased annually by 151%. The total number of patients treated with Korean Medical Psychotherapy was 4,289 in 2013. 2. The total cost for patients treated with Korean medical Psychotherapy in the public health medical insurance budget was 268,032,000 won in 2013. The average medical cost for one therapy was 17,000 won in 2013. 3. The number of patients in local clinics is increasing faster than the number in Korean medical hospitals. 4. The age group between 20∼30 years of age, for both men and women, is the group with the greatest density in Korean Medical Psychotherapy. 5. Neuropsychological Testing for Dementia in Korean Medicine is slowly decreasing. Conclusions: The prevalence of mental illness in Korea is increasing, therefore, the demand for Korean Medical Psychotherapy has increased recently. Authorizing Korean Medical psychiatrists to utilize Korean mental Health resources is essential. This study could be helpful in understanding the current status for the purpose of expanding Korean Medical Psychotherapy.
Objectives: Patients with dementia are increasing in Korea. So the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment of dementia is growing. In this paper, we evaluated the result of employing the Korean medical diagnostic pattern as a tool in clinics. Methods: Patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease were evaluated using the Korean medical diagnostic pattern tool. Results: The number of patients with liver-kidney yin deficiency pattern/syndrome was 35. Analyzing the ratio difference between the 'liver-kidney yin deficiency' group and the 'not liver-kidney yin deficiency' group revealed that the ratio of the responses to the fourth question was less than zero. The ratio of the responses to the fifth, seventh, and eight questions were all less than 10%. The ratio of the responses to the first and second questions were greater than 30%. Conclusions: Of the six diagnostic patterns, liver-kidney yin deficiency was the greatest in the study subjects. The fourth question in the liver-kidney yin deficiency tool tests for the lack of appropriateness whereas the fifth, seventh, and eight questions test for lack of discrimination. Applying more weight to the first and second questions was an excellent choice to increase the discrimination.
Objectives: As the elderly population grows and the prevalence of depression increases, the incidence of geriatric depression disorder will continue to increase. The effect of an intensive Korean medicine treatment program on geriatric depression disorder was studied. Methods: Geriatric depression disorder patients who received treatment over a period of three years were reviewed, with the geriatric depression score (GDS) used as the primary outcome. The intensive Korean medical treatment program applied to the geriatric depression disorder patients consisted of herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, meditation, qigong exercises, and reminiscence therapy. Results: The GDS scores of patients who received the intensive Korean medical treatment program decreased from an average of 19.57 (±5.52) to 15.76 (±6.99) and there was a significant difference. Conclusions: When the intensive Korean medical treatment program was applied to geriatric depression disorder patients, the symptoms of depression improved. This treatment program will be helpful for improving symptoms in patients and can be applied by trained clinicians.
