The use of postsclerotherapy compression was evaluated in 37 women with bilaterally symmetrical telangiectatic leg veins. Compressed vessels tended to achieve a greater clinical resolution when located on the distal leg and/or when greater than 0.5 mm in diameter. Postsclerotherapy hyperpigmentation fell from 40.5% to 28.5% with the use of compression. In addition, ankle and calf edema were lessened if a graduated compression stocking was worn immediately after sclerotherapy.
In ref 9 the minimum activation energy paths for reaction of acetyl (reactions 9 and 11) and acetonyl radicals are shown to involve bimolecular radical combination and hydrogen abstraction from acetone itself.The estimated activation energies for these reactions are 18 ± 3 kcal mol-' (acetyl) and 16 ± 3 kcal mol-1 (acetonyl). Since the activation energies for olefin additions involving these species can also be anticipated to be large, their principal mode of reaction likely involves bimole-cular combination. (31) P.
Summary
Some of the immunologic aspects of psoriasis suggest that complement may be involved in the pathophysiology of that disease. The purpose of this work was to examine the complement system in more detail in 20 patients with psoriasis. Classical pathway determinations, RCH50 and factor B levels were normal or elevated. Abnormally low properdin levels were seen in 12/20 patients. No patient had a serum properdin value greater than 1 standard deviation above the control mean. Mean C3–C9 consumption after zymosan or cobra venom incubation was also significantly less than normal (P < 0·001). Thus, abnormalities of the complement system are present in psoriasis and seem limited to the alternative pathway.
