Sur les rives bordelaises de la Garonne, la mise au jour de trois plates-formes portuaires antiques et médiévales implantées sous le niveau des plus hautes mers de vives eaux (PHMVE) atteste une élévation de celui-ci de près de 1,10 m entre le XII e et le XIV e siècle. Elle a été ensuite identifiée lors de la fouille du port de Londres et sur le littoral méridional de la mer du Nord. D'un autre côté, des études européennes suggèrent les conséquences d'une telle élévation du niveau marin par l'identification de sites antiques et médiévaux immergés. Elle n'est pourtant pas reconnue au sein de la courbe d'élévation globale du niveau marin. Cette dernière tendrait donc à lisser des oscillations d'ordre séculaire et régional. Cette hausse se corrèle avec l'optimum climatique médiéval. En conclusion, cette transgression est comparable à celle constatée durant le XX e siècle, permettant ainsi de moduler l'impact du forçage anthropique sur cette dernière.
Les travaux de construction du tramway de Bordeaux ont mis au jour une abside à pans coupés à proximité immédiate de la cathédrale Saint-André, dans l'angle sud-est de l'enceinte antique, érigée aux alentours de 280 apr. J.-C. Les plans, les dimensions de l'édifice et la richesse de son décor nous incitent à voir dans ce monument une construction majeure de Burdigala érigée à la fin du iv e s. Il s'agit vraisemblablement de la première cathédrale de Bordeaux érigée au sein d'un groupe épiscopal enfoui sous l'actuelle cathédrale. Avec la basilique Saint-Seurin et la basilique Sainte-Marie toute proche, cet imposant monument révèle l'ancienneté des origines chrétiennes de Bordeaux.
