A wave travelling in the positive x direction in one dimension is described mathematically aswhere v is the velocity of the wave, x is the coordinate of position and f is the time. In other words, it is a function of x -v f . This definition is usually given in any standard physics textbook. The definition is not an easy one, and many students cannot understand it. I discovered this while teaching a course in quantum mechanics to fourth-year students at my institution. Quite a number ofthe students did not know that $a = L-'I2 exp[i(k,xo , f ) ] and J, b--L-l/2 exp[i( -klxcolt)]
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
