Malaysian construction industry is suffering problem of producing high wastage and low productivity. Lean construction is an approach which is feasible to cope with the situation and it will be more significant to be applied by all players in Malaysian construction industry. Thus, this paper is to review the lean construction concept and components which are applicable in Malaysian construction industry. It was found that lean construction components comprise of principles, criteria and tools. Components are designated to convey the concept of lean construction which is to add value and eliminate the non added value in acquiring construction end product.
Abstract. The term Industrialised Building System (IBS) is widely recognised by construction players in Malaysia since its first implementation since 1960s for IBS pilot projects of Pekeliling Flats and Rifle Range Flats. The aim for the implementation is to promote better system in delivering construction end-products which offers efficiency and effectiveness. At the same time, Bumiputera construction players are the majority of parties in construction industry especially in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the perception and awareness of IBS implementation among Bumiputera players. It is found that, Bumiputera construction players have sound knowledge on the IBS and optimistic towards further implementation for future projects. Nonetheless, issues on payment methods and coordination of IBS project delivery are found to be the negative perceptions which are considered as hindrance for Bumiputera construction players' involvement in IBS project.
Construction site safety is a vital issue in construction safety management. The causes of accidents in the construction industry, among others are due to individual behaviour, complicated work-site surroundings and inadequate safety supervision at the construction site. The case study, namely Pan-Borneo Highway (PBH), was initiated through the Economic Transformation Programme to transform Malaysia into a high-income nation. The PBH is an option travel mode highway alongside Borneo road linking the states of Sarawak and Sabah with Brunei. The iconic project started from Sematan, Sarawak to Tawau, Sabah. This paper aimed to evaluate the current safety management practices on PBH construction sites in Kuching, Sarawak, as well as to emphasise the significance of road construction safety supervision. Questionnaires were distributed to 30 respondents, and the survey responses were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. The result suggested that the most important safety practices are the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), followed by accident reporting and maintenance report and provision of safety policy. Proper safety management on the construction site can minimise accidents and protect all parties involved in the construction industry.
Urbanization should involve physical development such as the building itself and urban green space, a public space filled with plants. However, creating urban green space is not a priority by private developers which consider financial aspect and high-return developments that provide them with greater benefits. Asa result, most modern urban development lacks urban green space, which impacts the character of urbanites' lifestyles. As a result, the goal of this study is to encourage private developers in Kuching to create urban green space. This research adopted a survey using questionnaires focusing on Kuching city. The result highlights the challenges of establishing urban green space from the perspective of private developers in Kuching. This outcome will add to the knowledge where the perception of private developers is being discussed. Future research should continue to explore ways of enhancing positive attitudes among private developers to enhance their engagement in urban green space. Abstract. IBS precast concrete is construction system which is meant to improve the conventional construction process. However IBS precast concrete projects are suffering from serious problems such as cost overrun, delays and less quality of the end product. The absence of coordination is perceived as the reason for this issue. The purpose of this paper is to review the significance of coordination for IBS precast concrete in the construction industry. It if found that the fragmentation which occurs in the construction industry requires continuity of coordination due to the construction activities are intertwined in nature. Coordination is designated to assist stakeholders in completing and complementing each other with the paramount focus of achieving the objective. Proper coordination is required in delivering the desired construction product at the ideal time, cost and quality. As for the findings, the significance of coordination for IBS precast concrete can be seen through the precast concrete construction phases which consist of planning; design; manufacturing; transportation and installation/construction. These phases are meant to complement construction process with the purpose to reduce issues of fragmentation and enhance IBS precast concrete project delivery.
