Im Streit zwischen dem Warschauer Hofkapellmeister Marco Scacchi und dem Danziger Organisten Paul Siefert scheint Sieferts Position der Situation in Deutschland, wo man sich um die Integration von alten und neuen Stilmitteln bemühte, eher zu entsprechen als diejenige Scacchis. Schütz' Stellungnahme besteht in der Darlegung seiner eigenen 'Stillehre': Er versteht den generalbaßlosen Kontrapunktstil als Grundlage für den modernen konzertierenden Stil mit Basso continuo. Von Scacchis rigoroser Doktrin mit ihren 'stilreinen' Gattungen will Schütz nichts wissen, und wie die Motetten seiner <Geistlichen Chormusik> zeigen, war er auch hinsichtlich der Einbeziehung von Elementen des Madrigals oder sogar des Konzerts in den Kontrapunktstil weitaus toleranter als Scacchi. Nicht nur musikalische Wege, vorab italienische und deutsche, führen zu Heinrich Schütz. Seine Lehrjahre in Kassel bildeten die Basis für eine umfassende Bildung, und bei der Durchsetzung der rigorosen, nicht zuletzt von religiösen Zielen geprägten Machtpolitik des hessischen Landgrafen Moritz spielten die Künste eine wichtige Rolle. Hier konnte Schütz schon früh lernen, wie gerade die Musik zu politischen Zwecken eingespannt werden konnte. So fiel es ihm nicht schwer, später als Hofkapellmeister am kursächsischen Hof in Dresden den an ihn gerichteten Erwartungen jederzeit zu entsprechen. Schütz komponierte nicht nur äußerst ambitionierte, sondern immer auch repräsentative Werke, mit denen er die religiös-politischen Strategien seines Landesherrn wirkungsvoll unterstützte und gleichzeitig eigene künstlerische Ziele verfolgte.
