ZnO nanorod arrays were fabricated using a hydrothermal method. The nanorods were studied by scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and positron annihilation spectroscopy before and after annealing in different environments and at different temperatures. Annealing atmosphere and temperature had significant effects on the PL spectrum, while in all cases the positron diffusion length and PL decay times were increased. We found that, while the defect emission can be significantly reduced by annealing at 200 degrees C, the rods still have large defect concentrations as confirmed by their low positron diffusion length and short PL decay time constants.

By employing broadband femtosecond Kerr-gated time-resolved fluorescence (KTRF) and transient absorption (TA) techniques, we report the first (to our knowledge) femtosecond combined time- and wavelength-resolved study on an ultraviolet-excited nucleoside and a single-stranded oligonucleotide (namely adenosine (Ado) and single-stranded adenine oligomer (dA)(20)) in aqueous solution. With the advantages of the ultrafast time resolution, the broad spectral and temporal probe window, and a high sensitivity, our KTRF and TA results enable the real time monitoring and spectral characterization of the excited-state relaxation processes of the Ado nucleoside and (dA)(20) oligonucleotide investigated. The temporal evolution of the 267 nm excited Ado KTRF spectra indicates there are two emitting components with lifetimes of approximately 0.13 ps and approximately 0.45 ps associated with the L(a) and L(b) pipi* excited states, respectively. These Ado results reveal no obvious evidence for the involvement of the npi* state along the irradiative internal conversion pathway. A distinct mechanism involving only the two pipi* states has been proposed for the ultrafast Ado deactivation dynamics in aqueous solution. The time dependence of the 267 nm excited (dA)(20) KTRF and TA spectra reveals temporal evolution from an ultrafast "A-like" state (with a approximately 0.39 ps decay time) to a relatively long-lived E(1) "excimer" (approximately 4.3 ps decay time) and an E(2) "excimer-like" (approximately 182 ps decay time) state. The "A-like" state has a spectral character closely resembling the excited state of Ado. Comparison of the spectral evolution between the results for Ado and (dA)(20) provides unequivocal evidence for the local excitation character of the initially photoexcited (dA)(20). The rapid transformation of the locally excited (dA)(20) component into the delocalized E(1) "excimer" state which then further evolves into the E(2) "excimer-like" state indicates that base stacking has a high ability to modify the excited-state deactivation pathway. This modification appears to occur by suppressing the internal conversion pathway of an individually excited base component where the stacking interaction mediates efficient interbase energy transfer and promotes formation of the collective excited states. This feature of the local excitation that is subsequently followed by rapid energy delocalization into nearby bases may occur in many base multimer systems. Our results provide an important new contribution to better understanding DNA photophysics.

Defects in three different types of ZnO nanostructures before and after annealing under different conditions were studied. The annealing atmosphere and temperature were found to strongly affect the yellow and orange-red defect emissions, while green emission was not significantly affected by annealing. The defect emissions exhibited a strong dependence on the temperature and excitation wavelength, with some defect emissions observable only at low temperatures and for certain excitation wavelengths. The yellow emission in samples prepared by a hydrothermal method is likely due to the presence of OH groups, instead of the commonly assumed interstitial oxygen defect. The green and orange-red emissions are likely due to donor acceptor transitions involving defect complexes, which likely include zinc vacancy complexes in the case of orange-red emissions.

Ultraviolet irradiation of DNA produces electronic excited states that predominantly eliminate the excitation energy by returning to the ground state (photostability) or following minor pathways into mutagenic photoproducts (photodamage). The cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) formed from photodimerization of thymines in DNA is the most common form of photodamage. The underlying molecular processes governing photostability and photodamage of thymine-constituted DNA remain unclear. Here, a combined femtosecond broadband time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies were employed to study a monomer thymidine and a single-stranded thymine oligonucleotide. We show that the protecting deactivation of a thymine multimer is due to an ultrafast single-base localized stepwise mechanism where the initial excited state decays via a doorway state to the ground state or proceeds via the doorway state to a triplet state identified as a major precursor for CPD photodamage. These results provide new mechanistic characterization of and a dynamic link between the photoexcitation of DNA and DNA photostability and photodamage.

Cytosine (Cyt) among all the nucleic acid bases features the most complex and least understood nonradiative deactivation, a process that is crucially important for its photostability. Herein, the excited state dynamics of Cyt and a series of its N1- and C5-derivatives, including the full set of Cyt nucleosides and nucleotides in DNA and RNA and the nucleosides of 5-methyl cytosine, 5-methylcytidine and 2'-deoxy-5-methylcytidine, have been investigated in water and in methanol employing femtosecond broadband time-resolved fluorescence coupled with fs transient absorption spectroscopy. The results reveal remarkable state-specific effects of the substitution and solvent in tuning distinctively the timescales and pathways of the nonradiative decays. For Cyt and the N1-derivatives, the nonradiative deactivations occur in a common two-state process through three channels, two from the light-absorbing ππ* state with respectively the sub-picosecond (∼0.2 ps) and the picosecond (∼1.5 ps) time constant, and the third is due to an optically dark nπ* state with the lifetime ranging from several to hundreds of picoseconds depending on solvents and substitutions. Compared to Cyt, the presence of the ribose or deoxyribose moiety at the N1 position of N1-derivatives facilitates the formation of the nπ* at the sub-picosecond timescale and at the same time increases its lifetime by ∼4-6 times in both water and methanol. In sharp contrast, the existence of the methyl group at the C5 position of the C5-derivatives eliminates completely the sub-picosecond ππ* channel and the channel due to the nπ*, but on the other hand slows down the decay of the ππ* state which after relaxation exhibits a single time constant of ∼4.1 to ∼7.6 ps depending on solvents. Varying the solvent from water to methanol accelerates only slightly the decay of the ππ* state in all the compounds; while for Cyt and its N1-derivatives, this change of solvent also retards strongly the nπ* channel, prolongs its lifetime from such as ∼7.7 ps in water to ∼52 ps in methanol for Cyt and from ∼30 ps in water to ∼186 ps in methanol for deoxycytidine. The spectral signatures we obtained for the ππ* and the nπ* states allow unambiguous evidence for clarifying uncertainties in the excited states of Cyt and the derivatives. The results provide a unifying experimental characterization at an improved level of detail about the photophysics of Cyt and its analogues under biologically relevant conditions and may help in understanding the photostability as well as photo-damages of the bases and related DNAs.

Charge-transfer excited states have frequently been studied by using 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) as a model. In nonpolar solvents, a single fluorescence band is observed from a locally excited (LE) state. In polar solvents, the initially populated LE state reacts further to produce a stable intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state, which gives rise to a second fluorescence band that overlaps with, but is abnormally red-shifted from, the LE emission.[1] Results of experiments using aprotic solvents are well described by models in which polarity is the only solvent property that affects the charge transfer reaction activation energy and the relative stabilization of the ICT and LE states.[2] Whilst much work continues to concentrate on determining the structures of the LE and ICT states, [3][4][5][6][7] the precise nature of the difference between the properties of the excited state in protic and aprotic solvents is little understood. For example, the fluorescence quantum yield of DMABN in protic solvents is lower and the fluorescence spectrum is further red-shifted and broadened, relative to measurements in aprotic solvents of the same polarity, [8,9] and the fluorescence decay kinetics are difficult to interpret.[2] Hydrogen bonding in protic solvents can lead to complicated interactions [10] but although specific solute-solvent and solute-solute interactions have been discussed, [8,[11][12][13][14] there is no generally accepted explanation. There are similar problems in other cases of dual fluorescence.[15]The time-resolved infrared (TRIR) absorption spectra presented here demonstrate and monitor the formation of a hydrogen-bonded charge-transfer state of photoexcited DMABN in the protic solvent methanol (MeOH), through the development of the CN IR absorption band from an initial singlet into a doublet. The initial single band is interpreted as belonging to an ICT state like that created in aprotic acetonitrile (MeCN), where only one absorption band is observed at all delay times. The second component is interpreted as being due to the hydrogen-bonded chargetransfer state; the kinetics show the populations of the free and hydrogen-bonded species coming to dynamic equilibrium. We designate the hydrogen-bonded state as HICT. This is the first direct observation of hydrogen bonding in an excited state. Since the populations in the LE state and the two charge-transfer states coexist, the fluorescence will be triple, not dual in character. Neglect of this major factor is considered to account for much of the difficulty in interpreting the fluorescence results. [2,8,[11][12][13] A mechanism of this kind has not to our knowledge been proposed before. We believe this interpretation is applicable to other molecules with solvent-dependent dual fluorescence. The weak photon absorption and fast carrier kinetics of graphene limit its application in photodetection. This limitation can be overcome by introducing photosensitive nanostructures to graphene. Herein we report the synthesis of a ZnO nanorod/graphene heterostructure by a facile in situ solution growth method. By combining the attributes of photosensitive ZnO nanorods and highly conductive graphene, we for the first time demonstrate a highly sensitive visible-blind ultraviolet (UV) sensor based on graphene related heterostructure. The photoresponsibility of the UV sensor can reach 22.7 A W(-1), which is over 45,000 fold higher than that of single graphene sheet based photodetectors.

A high-performance Kerr gate designed for the suppression of fluorescence in both time-resolved and steady-state resonance Raman spectroscopy is described and its performance illustrated. This is an improved version of a system described recently, with superior extinction ratio, higher throughput and wider usable spectral range. Specially designed polarizers are an essential feature of the system. The gate opens for ∼4 ps at 1 kHz repetition rate, throughput in the open state is up to ∼40% (excluding Fresnel losses on optical elements), the extinction ratio in the closed state is 10 −5 and the usable spectral range is 300-700 nm with a single set of polarizers. The Kerr gate is driven by ∼500 µ µJ, 1 kHz, 1 ps laser pulses at 800 nm and we believe that it is currently the most powerful device in operation for the temporal rejection of fluorescence from Raman spectra. It increases the general applicability of Raman spectroscopy as illustrated by picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of the intramolecular charge transfer state of 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile and by the ground-state Raman spectrum of unleaded petrol at 400 nm probe wavelength.
