A new mouth breeder species of Gymnogeophagus is described from a tributary of the río Uruguay. It is distinguished from most species of the genus by the presence of hypertrophied lips, and from G. labiatus and G. pseudolabiatus by the color pattern. The presence of successive allopatric species of the Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys clade inhabiting the tributaries of the río Uruguay is discussed.
The freshwater cnidarian Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester 1880, has invaded lakes and ponds as well as artificial water bodies throughout the world. The first record in Uruguay corresponding to the jellyfish was made in 1961 in two artificial fountains, with no mention of the polyp form. Although local reports of other related polyp species have been made, information on the benthic form of C. sowerbii is lacking. Here we report the finding of live frustules, solitary individuals, medusae and colonies from a natural lagoon in August 2010, allowing us to observe the morphology and behavior of the polyp stage in captivity. In addition, molecular identification and remarks on the potencial path of introduction are presented. This is the first record in Uruguay of both polyp and medusa stages of C. sowerbii in a natural water body, Del Medio Lagoon (Dpto. de Florida), Uruguay. Keywords: Craspedacusta sowerbii, freshwater jellyfish, 16S RNA, polyp stage, Uruguay.

Killifishes (Cyprinodontiformes) are a group of fish that include a high proportion of small-bodied species living in seasonal aquatic habitats, with narrow geographical distributions and high human impact. They are among the most vulnerable vertebrates in the Neotropical region, with nearly half of the species in threat categories. Herein, we propose a new phylogenetic hypothesis of the Rivulidae genus Austrolebias, based on 10 genes (six nuclear and four mitochondrial) and 191 morphological characters, including 90% of the total valid species of this genus. An updated definition and diagnosis of the existing subgenera of Austrolebias is provided, and these are erected to genera. Also, four new genera are erected to accommodate the taxonomy of the group to the current phylogenetic hypothesis. Additionally, we describe Argolebias guarani sp. nov., from a seasonal pond in the Middle Paraná River basin, which is diagnosed by a unique colour pattern. This addition reinforces this area as a biodiversity hotspot of endemicity and highlights the importance of this region for conservation. Data on the ontogenetic changes in colour pattern, chorion ornamentation of the egg and ecology of this species are also provided.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
