We have measured the O-isotope effects on the magnetic and electrical properties of La 0.65 Ca 0.35 MnO 3 under hydrostatic pressure up to 1.9 GPa. The pressure was found to reversibly enhance the metal-insulator transition temperature T C and suppress the resistivity of both isotopic samples, but at different rates, depending on the O-isotopic mass of the samples. It was also found that pressure suppresses the isotope effect linearly, while the 18 O→ 16 O exchange drastically enhances . The greater d ln T C /dP and ͉d ln /dP͉ observed in the 18 O sample can be understood qualitatively in terms of the double exchange interaction between Mn ions and the band reduction effect of polarons, but the d ln T C /dP difference is much greater than predicted. The discrepancy suggests that modifications may be needed for the model. ͓S0163-1829͑99͒50146-X͔ RAPID COMMUNICATIONS PRB 60 R14 999 OXYGEN-ISOTOPE EFFECTS ON La 0.65 Ca 0.35 MnO 3 . . . scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
