Polychromatic X-ray microdiffraction is an emerging tool for studying mesoscale structure and dynamics. Crystalline phase, orientation (texture), elastic and plastic strain can be nondestructively mapped in three dimensions with good spatial and angular resolution. Local crystallographic orientation can be determined to approximately 0.01 degree and elastic strain tensor elements can be measured with a resolution of approximately 10(-4) or better. Complete strain tensor information can be obtained by augmenting polychromatic microdiffraction with a monochromatic measurement of one Laue-reflection energy. With differential-aperture depth profiling, volumes tens to hundreds of micrometers below the surface are accessible so that three-dimensional distributions of crystalline morphology including grain boundaries, triple points, second phases and inclusions can all be mapped. Volume elements below 0.25 microm3 are routinely resolved so that the grain boundary structure of most materials can be characterized. Here the theory, instrumentation and application of polychromatic microdiffraction are described.

Polychromatic synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction is used to determine the epitaxy of YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) films grown on polycrystalline Y.15Zr.85O1.925/CeO2/Y2O3/Ni95W5(Ni) rolling-assisted, biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). A novel analysis technique is introduced in which the orientation of mosaic films is measured by using a Hough transform to recognize arcs in Laue microdiffraction patterns that correspond to low-index zone axes. While the overall epitaxy is cube-on-cube, grain-by-grain analysis reveals a systematic misorientation of YBCO with respect to Ni: the YBCO [001] rotates toward the direction of the surface normal. The crystal mosaic (for rotation about the rolling direction) measured by a single diffraction pattern sampling a 0.5-μm2 surface area is 0.7° full width at half-maximum for YBCO grown on Ni grains with a low tilt; for more highly tilted grains, the YBCO patterns can no longer be measured, presumably due to the large mosaic. The YBCO mosaic over the entire area of a Ni grain is ∼2.5° and varies with grain size; the mosaic is smaller for larger grains.

Cost-supply curves for delivered wood chips from short rotation woody crops were calculated for 21 regularly-spaced locations spanning the state of Tennessee. These curves were used to systematically evaluate the combined effects of location and facility demand on wood chip feedstock costs in Tennessee. The cost-supply curves were developed using BRAVO, a GIS-based decision support system which calculates marginal cost of delivering wood chips to a specific location given road network maps and maps of farmgate prices and supplies of woody chips from short rotation energy crops.Marginal costs of delivered chips varied by both facility location in the state and facility demand. Marginal costs were lowest in central Tennessee unless the facility demand was greater than 2.7 million dry Mg per year (3 million dry tons per year) in which case west Tennessee was the Iowest cost region. Marginal costs rose rapidly with increasing facility demand in the mountainous eastern portion of the state. Transportation costs accounted for 18 to 29% of the delivered cost and ranged between $8 and $18/dry Mg ($7 and $16/dry ton). Reducing the expected farmer participation rate from 100% to 50% or 25% dramatically raised the marginal costs of feedstock supply in the east and central regions of the state. The analysis demonstrates the need to use geographically-specific information when projecting the potential costs and supplies of biomass feedstock.
