The history of fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring is traced from the first described auscultation to the introduction of intrapartum cardiotocography approximately ten years ago. The relationship between MR monitoring and other modern obstetric techniques is discussed and 'consumer' attitudes to these techniques are described.
