Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Die Gesamtzahl und die Spezies der Heimtiere unter den Kleintierpatienten der Medizinischen Kleintierklinik der Universität München in den Jahren 1967, 1987, 1993, 1997 und 2002 wurden untersucht. Material und Methode: Zur Auswertung gelangten die Krankenkarteikarten der in diesen Jahren vorgestellten 15 698 Klein-und Heimtierpatienten. Die Heimtiere wurden nach Spezies unterteilt in Chinchilla, Frettchen, Goldhamster, Kaninchen, Meerschweinchen, Ratte und Zwergkaninchen sowie sonstige im Heim gehaltene Kleinsäuger. Ergebnis: 965 (6,15%) der insgesamt 15 698 Kleintiere waren Heimtiere. Im Berichtszeitraum stieg der Anteil der Heimtiere von 1,7% im Jahr 1967 auf 8,2% im Jahr 2002 kontinuierlich an, wobei am stärksten Kaninchen, Zwergkaninchen und Meerschweinchen vertreten waren. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz: Die Heimtiere in der Kleintierpraxis nehmen zu und gewinnen an Bedeutung. Es ist erforderlich, dass dies sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Aus-und Fortbildung berücksichtigt wird.
