A pulsed ultrasonic light diffraction technique was used to obtain values of the piezo-optic coefficient for 24 liquids. From these results, several empirical expressions were obtained that facilitate calculation of this parameter. N describing the interaction of acoustic waves and light in a liquid medium, a knowledge of the elastooptic coefficient (pOn/Ot>)8 is required. • This parameter describes the variation of the refractive index n with adiabatic variations in the density p. It is frequently calculated from expressions obtained from the wellknown Lorentz•'-Lorenz, a Eykman, 4 and Gladstone-Dale 5 relations. The piezo-optic coefficient (On/Op)8 describes the variation of the refractive index with adiabatic variations in the pressure p.• These parameters are simply related by the expression (t>O•) l(On,• where the adiabatic compressibility/• is related to the velocity of propagation of the acoustic wave c by the expression Xylene(mixture) 0.589 0.533 0.499 ...... 0.432 ß ß ß ß ß ß 0.320 ß ß ß 0.323 ß ß ß 0.297 ß ß ß 0.500 0 302 0.296 ß ß ß 0,495 All values given are for 5890 J, except Ref. 9, which are for 4360
A systematic study of acoustically induced birefrigence in castor oil is described. Particular emphasis is placed upon the evaluation of a measuring technique based upon a polarization analysis of the Fraunhofer optical diffraction spectrum. Results obtained using this measuring technique are compared with results of measurements made in the optical nearfield.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
