by measuring the relative areas of the trans-cyclooctene and cyclooctane peaks in the vapor phase chromatograms of the heated sample and an unheated sample of the same composition and calculating their ratio. Three vapor phase chromatograms were ob-tained for each sample. With this correction, values for the specific rotation of each sample were calculated, and the decrease in this value with time was followed. In all cases the reactions were followed to 80-90 % completion.
