Two models are studied to describe the spread of foot-and-mouth disease during the 1973 epidemic in Austria. The models are modifications of a three-class-model (due to KEEMACK and MCKENDRICK) taking into account the special character of the disease 88 well a8 control methods (stamping-out-method, vaccination programs).
Summary Steroid hormone content and aromatase activity in ovarian cysts in cattle In 65 ovarian cysts from 30 slaughtered cattle the concentrations in the cyst fluid of progesterone, androstendione, testosterone and total oestrogens, and the activity of aromatase (in cyst wall) were determined in vitro and compared with the macroscopic and histological findings. Classification of the cysts according to the histological findings gave, in contrast to the macroscopic criteria, a clear relationship with steroid hormone activity in the cyst fluid and with aromatase activity in the cyst wall. In cysts with morphologically unchanged granulosa cell layers there was low progesterone (73 ± 20 ng/ml), high androgen (55 ± 23 ng/ml) and oestrogen (364 ± 58 ng/ml) and evidence of aromatase activity in the cyst wall. When there was complete degeneration of the granulosa cells the progesterone concentration was very high (397 ± 54 ng/ml), with a low level of androgen (8 ± 1 ng/ml) and no detectable aromatase activity. From the steroid hormone concentration of the cyst fluid and the aromatase activity in vitro it is possible to determine whether granulosa cells are present in ovarian cysts.
