UU. se realizaron utilizando bloques de hormigón de imos 55 dms de superficie y 0,15 m de espesor.Los primeros éxitos obtenidos con estos materiales sirvieron de aliento para ir modificando y perfeccionando estas estructuras y los métodos constructivos. En los primeros pasos se aumentó las dimensiones de los bloques y se reforzaron con armaduras para dotarlas de mayor resistencia. Los revestimientos se apoyaban en una capa granular de piedra que mejoraba el drenaje y el aislamiento.A medida que la ejecución se iba mecanizando, se lograba mayor celeridad en la construcción por medio de los nuevos modelos perfeccionados que aparecían en el comercio.Ya en 1935, una gran parte de las nuevas carreteras se revestían con losas de hormigón. En los últimos años las dimensiones de las losas han ido aumentando, siendo corrientes las de 25 centímetros de espesor, 3,60 m de anchura y 30 m de longitud. Las uniones entre losas adyacentes han experimentado también su evolución, tanto formando juntas longitudinales como transversales, con objeto de facilitar la transmisión de cargas y las deformaciones temporales a que dan lugar los cambios de temperatuüra en cada una de las losas aisladamente.Aim cuando esta forma de construii* se ha mostrado satisfactoriamente-^y actualmente se ha normalizado en la práctica de estudios y proyectos de carreteras en los EE. Uü.-no se cree que sea un tipo óptimo en la construcción de revestimientos de hormigón armado.Los ingenieros de caminos admiten que si la cuantía de armaduras hubiera sido apropiada, las grietas salteadas que frecuentemente aparecen en las losas de hormigón armado de mayor longitud no constituirían un problema de conservación. Si bien es verdad que estas grietas se hacen sensibles en los efectos térmicos de expansión y contracción, sus labios no se abren hasta luces objetantes durante períodos de frío o se desgarran bajo la acción de las cargas de la circulación.Estas consideraciones han conducido a la teoría, de que las pavimentaciones continuas provistas de una adecuada cuantía longitudinal ri3 acero podrían construirse sin la formación de juntas preestablecidas. La retracción del hormigón y las deformaciones inducidas por los cambios de temperatura podrán ser causa de estrechas fisuraciones que aparecerán en frecuentes intervalos, pero las armaduras se encargarán de mantener la continuidad longitudinal y limitar la luz de las grietas.Teóricamente, este método constructivo da por resultado una losa semiflexible, capaz de resistir a las condiciones normales de carga debidas a la circulación y meteorológicas.
