Elnleltung.Schon in den friihesten Zeiten waren einige in der Natur vorkommende Arsenverbindungen bekannt oder vielmehr verrufen wegen ihrer verhangnisvollen Wirkung auf den tierischen Organismus; z. B. daa Auripigment und daa Realgar. Arsen ( u p y v = Mann, vadu = uberwinden), das manntotende Element, wurde immer vorzugsweise zu verbrecherischen Zwecken benutzt, und zwar dermaaen, da5 das bei uns bekannte Rattenpulver A@, in Frankreich den Namen ,,poudre de succe9sion'L bekam. Auch gegenwartig kommen noch viele Vergiftungen mit Arsen vor, obgleich ihre Anzahl betrachtlich abnimmt.Durch den so oft frevelhaften Gebrauch des Arsens wurde von allen Seiten die Aufmerksamkeit der Chemiker auf dieses Element gelenkt. Die Eigenschaften desselben wurden studiert und die Nachweis-bezw. Ausscheidungsmethoden allmahlich verscharft.Mit der Einfuhrung des M a r s h'schen A p p a r a t e s im Jahre 1836 hatte man gleichsam fur den Nachweis des Arsens die gro5tmogliche Empfindlichkeit erreicht.Eine unmittelbare Folge der Verscharfung der Tintersuchungsmethoden war, da5 die Zahl der Arsenvergiftungen abnahm, da die Aussicht auf Entdeckung verhaltnismafiig gro5er geworden war. Als zweite Folge jedoch wurde bald Amen gefunden an Orten, wo es vorher weder gefunden noch erwartet wurde. So fand 0 r f i 1 a 1839 ,Amen im Korper von Menschen, welche unter normalen Verhaltnissen lebten. D a n g e r und F 1 a n d i n sorgten dafur, da13 der Glaube an das ,,Normalarsen" wieder abgeschworen wurde.1875 aber wies G a u t i e r aufs neue die Existenz des Normalarsens nach. Er fand viele Mitkiimpfer, hierunter in erster Linie B e r t r a n d , aberauchzahlreiche Gegner, u. a. C e r n y , H o d l m o s e r und Z i e m k e. Bis 1903 folgte eine Reihe von Veroffentlichungen betreffs des Normalamens.Jedoch sind G a u t i e r und B e r t r a n d nicht denelben Ansicht, indem letzterer selbst SO weit geht, da5 er dem Amen einen Platz anweist neben Stickstoff, l) Autoreferat aus der gleichnamigen Inauguraldissertation, Leiden 1908.
