Summary Yeasts as a cause of mastitis in cattle 1,000 quarter milk samples from 250 cows with normal udders and 118 quarter samples from 100 cows with diseased udders were examined for yeastlike fungi. 3.1 per cent of the animals without changes in the milk and 26.4 per cent of those with milk changes gave samples positive for yeasts. Of the 64 different yeast strains isolated, 23 species were identified belonging to the genera Candida, Torulopsis, Trichosporon, Rhodotorula and Sporobolomyces. Most of these are ubiquitous mould species. Only 34 of the 64 strains grew at the body temperature of cattle. Only those species already known as mycotic agents in the viscera of man or animals can become implanted in the udder. Establishment was only possible after mucosal damage produced by bacterial lesions or after stimulation by antibiotics. The use of antibiotics favours the spread of yeasts in the secreting udder tissue. Facultative pathogens of the genus Candida can utilise the antibiotics penicillin and tetracycline hydrochloride as sources on nitrogen.
HEILBRON, 8). ZUCKER und Mitarbeiter (24) zeigten einen hoch
