The decomposition of the spray propellants CFCl3 and CF2Cl2 on the surface of variously treated zinc oxides has been studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Whereas decomposition on “untreated” surfaces could only be induced photolytically ( λ < 400 nm) “activated” surfaces caused both spontaneous dark and additionally, photocatalytic decomposition. Indications are that the mechanism involves interaction between physisorbed substrate molecules and surface electrons of the catalyst. Decomposition causes chlorination of the zinc oxide resulting in a surface approaching hypochlorite‐perchlorate stochiometry.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
