Samenvatting In het McMaster Model of Family Functioning (McMMFF) wordt het gezin opgevat als een taakgeorie¨nteerd en open systeem, waarvan het functioneren aan de hand van een zestal dimensies kan worden vastgelegd. Het gaat om de dimensies probleemoplossen, communicatie, rolvervulling, affectieve respons, affectieve betrokkenheid en beheersing van het gedrag. Een klinisch voorbeeld wordt gepresenteerd om deze manier van taxeren te illustreren. In de discussie wordt op de toepasbaarheid van dit model in onderwijs en onderzoek gewezen.
Samenvatting De literatuur over rouw in het gezin wordt aan de hand van vijf vragen en een klinisch vignet besproken. Rouwwerk en rouwtaken worden omschreven in termen van het gezin. Welke gezinskenmerken bepalen de invloed van een verlies op gezin en gezinsleden. De levenscyclus van het gezin levert een bruikbaar raamwerk op. Uiteenlopende verschijnselen wijzen op gestoorde rouw in het gezin: patronen van destructieve relaties, vervangproblematiek, stagneren van ontwikkelingen, disfunctionele grenzen en weerstand tegen het aangaan van nieuwe relaties. Voor-en nadelen van een gezinsbenadering worden genoemd. Een gezinsbenadering staat niet gelijk met een gezinstherapie. De auteurs pleiten voor een gezinsbenadering bij (gestoorde) rouw. Een paragraaf wordt geweid aan het engageren van gezinnen met rouwproblematiek. In het onderzoek wordt gesproken van een gemiddelde intelligentie en een ernstig neurotische ontwikkeling. Hij is de tweede in een gezin met drie jongens. De oudste, Peter, is zestien en de jongste, Wouter, is negen. Toen Simon anderhalf jaar oud was, is er nog een broertje, Mark, geboren. Mark bleek een aangeboren hartafwijking te hebben, is met succes geopereerd, maar met acht maanden toch nog onverwacht overleden. Peter was toen vijf en half jaar en Simon twee en half jaar oud. Wouter was nog niet geboren.De hieropvolgende tijd was moeilijk voor het gezin. Simon is veelvuldig ondergebracht bij anderen. Moeder heeft lange tijd veel hoofdpijnklachten gehad. Zij is uiteindelijk succesvol behandeld op een pijnpolikliniek. Mogelijk is zij ook een tijd somber en angstig geweest.Op zesjarige leeftijd wordt Simon aangemeld bij een RIAGG wegens hyperactiviteit en gedragsproblemen. Moeder vat de uitleg van de hulpverleners op als een beschuldiging. Ze vertelt later dat men vond dat zij nog veel verdriet had van het overlijden van Mark en dat dit de oorzaak was van de problemen met Simon. Na drie gesprekken is het gezin weggebleven. Er zijn nadien opnieuw verschillende separaties die van betekenis zijn. In 1987, als Simon negen jaar oud is, overlijdt moeders vader plotseling. Het gezin had veel contact met deze grootouders. In de nasleep hiervan ontstaat een conflict met de grootouders van vaders kant, waarna het contact met hen wordt verbroken.In deze periode is er al geruime tijd een huisvriend. Van de kinderen heeft Simon het meeste contact met hem. Een paar maanden na het overlijden van moeders vader doet de huisvriend een zelfmoordpoging. Daarna krijgt hij een relatie met een vriendin en verbreekt het contact met het gezin. Het gezin begrijpt niet wat er gebeurt; het voelt zich misbruikt en kwaad.In het contact van het gezin met moeders moeder, die nu weduwe is, zijn veel wisselingen geweest.
