Keinigen durch Krystallisieren aus Methanol (farblose Kadeln) oder Vakuum-Sublimation (kleine derbe Pyramiden). Chromonol wurde rnit der 5-fachen Menge reinen S u l f u r y l c h l o r i d s zuerst im Wasserbade, zum Schlul3 im Vakuuni bis zur Trockne abgedampft. Der Ruckstand krystallisierte aus Eisessig, Methanol oder Benzol in farblosen Nadeln vom Schmp. ZOP, die sich in verd. Lauge rnit gelber Farbe losen. Der gleiche Stoff wurde durch erschopfende Behandlung mit Chlor in Chloroform, sowie durch 5-stdg. Erhitzen rnit Sulfurylchlorid im Kohr auf IZOO erhalten. z-Chlor-chromonol: C9H503CI. Brr. Die Bestimmung des Methylalkohols in r e i n e n Losungen kann verhaltnismaflig einfach und genau durehgefiihrt werdenl). Liegen dagegen Gemische von Methylalkohol und anderen organischen Substanzen vor, so stofit man, trotz der sehr groi3en Zahl von Vorschriften und Methoden, die bisher vorgeschlagen wurden, bei der quantitativen Bestimmung oft auf erhebliche Schwierigkeiten. Die Umstandlichkeit und Unzuverlassigkeit vieler dieser Vorschriften veranlafiten Fischer und Schmidt2), die fiir die Alkohole typische Eigenschaft der groi3en Bildungs-und Verseifungsgeschwindigkeit ihrer Nitrite zur quantitativen Bestimmung der Alkoholebesonders des Methyl-und Bthylalkoholsnutzbar zu machen. Die leichte Bildung von Methylnitrit aus salpetriger Saure und Methylalkohol, seine Fliichtigkeit und seine gro5e Verseifungsgeschwindigkeit wurden schon friiher zur quantitativen Trennung der salpetrigen Saure von der Salpetersaure benutzts) . Prinzip der Methode: ,,Wind zu einer, auch der verdunntesten, methylalkoholischen Losung Natriuninitrit zugegeben und angesauelrt, so bildet sich fast rnomentan Methyliiitrit, welches info& seines niedrigen Siedepunktes (-12O) und seiner Unloslichkeit in waijriger Losung aus der Reaktionsflussiglreit entweicht. Es kann durch eine mit Salzsgure angesauerte salpetricer Jodkaliumlosung niomentan zu Saure verseift werd'en, welchMethylalkohol und letztere eine aquirafente-Menge Jod in Freiheit setzt, das in der iiblichen Weise init Natriumthiosulfat titriert wird."
Mitteilung aus dem HolzforschungsinstitutFur die Bestimmung von Methoxyl-Gruppen gibt es mehrere Methoden, unter denen die bekannte Bestimmung nach Zeisel (und ihre zahlreichen Modifikationen, z.B. nach Stritur, Bamberger, ViebGck und anderenl)) in der organischen analytischen Chemie die griji3te Verbreitung gefunden hat. Sie besitzt aber gewisse Nachteile, die darin bestehen, dai3 man ziemlich teure Analysensubstanzen verwenden mui3, daB sie weiterhin als gravimetrische Bestimmung langwierig und auch umstandlich ist und dai3 schliefilich bei der Analyse von Naturprodukten ihre Anwendung bedenklich erscheint, weil oft nicht von vornherein die Gewii3heit besteht, daD a d e r Methyljodid (oder Athyljodid bei Bthoxylbestimmungen) keine anderen fluchtigen Jodverbindungen bei der Behandlung der zu untersuchenden Substanz rnit Jodwasserstoffsaure entstehenz). Bei der Behandlung von Holz mit Jodwasserstoffslure ist die Bildung von Furfurol nicht ausgeschlossen, und dieser Aldehyd scheint auf die Methoxylbestimmung nach Zeisel einen storenden Einf lu13 auszuuben3). Ein anderer Weg zur Bestimmung des Methoxylgehaltes pflanzlicher Stoffe ist von FeZlenberg4) vorgeschlagen worden. Nach dieser Methode werden die Methoxylgruppen zuerst mit 72%iger Schwefeldure in der Hitze verseift, dann wird der abgespaltene Methylalkohol durch Destillation isoliert und angereichert, durch Oxydation rnit Kaliwnpermanganat in Formaldehyd iibergefiihrt und dieser mit fuchsin-schwefliger Siiure colorimetrisch bestimmt. Abgesehen davon, dal3 dime Methode &ehr umstandlich ist und deshalb sorgfliltigstee Einarbeiten erfordert, bestehen folgende Bedenken: 1. die Fehlerquellen colorimetrischer Bestimmungen sind verhdtnbmaBig gro8; 2. bei der Anwendung der Methode auf Holz wird zuminded der aus dem Lignin abgeepaltene Formaldehyd (Dioxymethylengruppen: -0-CH,-0-) als Methylalkohol mitbestimmt, wahrscheinlich aber auch noch andere Substanzen. H. Pringsheim UILd E. Kuhns) fillten zuerst evtl. gebildetee Furfurol mit Phenylhydrazin, konzmtrierten und reinigten d a m die verdiinnten Liisungen durch Destillation und bestimmten den Methylalkohol durch, Oxydation mit Bichromatschwefelsaure nach Niclouxa). Aber auch in dieaer Modifikation ist eine Methoxylbwtimmung noch sehr kompliziert und deshalb nicht zuver1;issig genug, da durch so viele Zwischenbehandlungen der zu untersuchenden Liisung die Analysengenauigkeit n.icht gefiirdert wird. Die quantitative Verseifung der Methoxylgruppen kann sowohl mit starker Jodwasserstoffsaure (spez. Gew. 1,4-1,7) als auch rnit 72%iger Schwefelsaure durchgefiihrt werden. Die Bestimmung des abgespaltenen Methyl jodids oder Methylalkohols kann aber nur dann exakte Schlusse auf den Methoxylgehalt des untersuchten Materials erlauben, w e m feststeht, daD n u r Methylalkohol durch die Bestimmungsmethode erfai3t wird. Dies ist der Fall, wenn fur die Bestimmung des Methylalkohols eine fur diesen charakteristische Reaktion herangezogen wird.
