Arsen, besser das Arsentrioxyd und die Salze der arsenien Säure, waren früher viel gebrauchte Arzneimittel. Heute werden sie, mit Ausnahme der organischen As-Verbindungen, unterschiedlich geschätzt. Für eine ganze Anzahl nicht seltener Hautkrankheiten ist Arsen aber noch bei vielen Ärzten beliebt -Psoriasis vulgaris, Lichen ruber planus, Dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring, Mykosis fungoides u. a. Dazu kommt Arsen in sogenannten blutbildenden" Arzneimitteln und Roborantien.Die zweite Möglichkeit, mit organischen Arsen-Verbindungen in Berührung zu kommen, ist in der Industrie gegeben: a. bei der Gewinnung und Verarbeitung von As-Mineralien, Herstellung von As-haltigen Insektiziden, Fungiziden und Farben, Verhüttung As-haltiger Metalle (Eisen, Kupfer, Silber, Kobalt, Nickel u. a.), b. bei der Verwendung von As-Verbindungen in Industrie, Gewerbe und Landwirtschaft. Arsenik wird zum Klären von Glas und Kristall, zur Herstellung weißer Emaille, als Beize in Kattundruckereien,-zum Graubeizen von Messing und Bronzeri, zum Bleihärten in der Sthrotfabrikation verwendet; früher, heute seltener, waren für Zimmeranstriche, Tapeten und Bron.zen As-haltige Farben, z. B. Kupferarsenite, in Gebrauch. Weiter ist zu nennen Arsenik als Konservierungsmittel für Tierbälge und zum Enthaaren von Fellen (Na-Arsenit, Auripigment + Kalk). Bedeutungsvoller ist der Umgang mit Arsen-Verbindungen enthaltenden Fungiziden, z. B. Holzimprägnierungsmitteln vom Typ der Baselite, und am wichtigsten ist die Anwendung von As-Insektiziden in Land-, Forst-und Vieh-(Schaf-) Wirtschaft.
