Le polymorphisme de 25 systèmes de marqueurs génétiques autosomaux(11 systèmes de groupes sanguins, 5 locus de lactoprotéines et 9 microsatellites) a été analysé dans un échantillon de la population de bovins Kouri du lac Tchad provenant de la zone en bordure du lac et d'iles localisées dans la préfecture de Bol. Les résultats obtenus, ainsi que les données déjà acquises sur différentes populations de taurins et de zébus africains et sur les races françaises, ont été traités par analyse factorielle des correspondances et par des méthodes de classification pour tenter de préciser le statut phylogénétique du Kouri. Selon cette étude, basée sur des marqueurs autosomaux, le Kouri se rapproche plus des zébus que des taurins africains alors que, dépourvu de bosse et possédant le chromosome Y submétacentrique de Bos taurus, il est classé normalement parmi les taurins. Il reste à évaluer la validité de diverses hypothèses explicatives, d'ailleurs non exclusives, différant par l'ancienneté postulée de l'apport de gènes de zébus : parenté du Kouri avec le Sanga du Sud de l'Afrique, introgression du zébu lors de son expansion sur le continent à partir du VIIIe siècle après J.-C., ou métissages, à l'époque moderne, avec les zébus entourant le bassin du lac Tchad.
Une enquête de juin 1992 sur les ressources génétiques caprines dans le cadre du Projet régional de recherches sur les petits ruminants (PRRPR, au Niger, au Cameroun et Tchad) portait sur 12 sites (5 au Nord Cameroun et 7 au Tchad). Au total 215 chèvres femelles adultes (105 au Nord Cameroun et 110 au Tchad) ont été examinées. Comme les populations après la domestication se caractérisent par une grande variabilité de l’extérieur – due à l’accumulation de mutants qui ne sont plus éliminés par la sélection naturelle que l’homme a considérablement atténuée en maintenant les animaux sous sa protection – on a utilisé ce phénomène pour mesurer le degré d’appartenance à la catégorie taxonomique appelée “population primaire”. Deux indices ont ainsi été utilisés : l’indice de primarité loci en ségrégation (IPs) et l’indice de primarité allèles au locus Agouti (IPa). Ces deux indices peuvent varier de 0 (race complètement standardisée : absence de variabilité de l’extérieur) à 1 (primarité totale, avec conservation de tous les variants accumulés depuis les débuts de la domestication).Pour IPs les estimées étaient de 0,77 au Nord Cameroun et de 0,84 au Tchad et pour IPa de 0,75 au Nord Cameroun et de 0,88 au Tchad. Des valeurs aussi élevées indiquent que, dans les deux pays, on est pratiquement en présence de populations primaires, au moins avec ce mode mesure. Ces valeurs sont fort proches de celles mesurées sur d’autres populations également considérées comme primaires, dans le Bassin méditerranéen et au Brésil [la SRD (Sem Raça Definida) du Ceará]. L’emploi de ces indices de primarité, est suggéré pour la cartographie des ressources génétiques caprines africaines, au moins dans une première phase d’approche.
Une enquête de terrain portant sur le quart Sud-Ouest du Tchad a permis de couvrir environ 20 % du territoire national (plus de 250 000 km2) avec 60 sites d'échantillonnage. Le ratio d'échantillonnage finalement atteint a été de 1/440. Au total 2 768 chèvres adultes ont été examinées pour l'étude de l'indice de gracilité sous-sternale (lGs) qui est égal au vide sous-sternal/profon deur de thorax (VSS/PT) sachant que le vide sous-sternal est égal à la hauteur au garrot moins la profondeur de thorax (VSS = HG; PT). L'analyse des lGs moyens des 60 sites étudiés a révélé l'existence de deux sous-populations caractérisées par des histogrammes qui ne se recouvraient pas. Les lGs moyens étaient de 1,04 pour la sous-population 1 et de 1,50 pour la sous-population 2. Sur le terrain, ces sous-populations définies biométriquement occupaient des aires distinctes. Au Sud du 11° de latitude N, dans la zone appelée zone 1 par les auteurs, se trouvait la sous-population 1 et au Nord de ce parallèle, dans la zone appelée zone 2, se trouvait la sous-population 2. La ligne de démarcation entre les deux zones suivait le 11e parallèle sur un centaine de kilomètres à l'intérieur du périmètre étudié. Ces résultats confirment le pouvoir discriminant d'une cartographie prenant simplement en considération deux caractéristiques vitale et morphologique : la profondeur de thorax qui est une évaluation du format métabolique de l'animal et l'indice de gracilité sous-sternale qui caractérise le type morphologique.
Les histogrammes des longueurs des cornes de deux populations de chèvres femelles adultes (39 au Nord Cameroun et 51 au Tchad) présentant un aspect plurimodal ont été soumis à une analyse qui a permis d’isoler 3 sous-populations de moyenne respectivement m1 = 16,00 ± 0,80 cm, m2 = 10,70 ± 1,70 cm et m3 = 4,60 ± 0,80 cm pour le Nord Cameroun, et m1 = 21,60 ± 2,60 cm, m2 = 14,80 ± 1,80 cm et m3 = 6,00 ± 0,00 cm pour le Tchad. Les deux populations semblent porter le même mutant de réduction de la longueur des cornes, provisoirement considéré comme autosomal à dominance intermédiaire et à pénétrance totale ou sub-totale. L’effet moyen de substitution de l’allèle muté par l’allèle sauvage est de 5,80 ± 0,45 cm au Nord Cameroun et de 7,18 ± 0,70 cm au Tchad, avec un rapport de réduction de 0,73, très proche de celui qui affecte la hauteur au garrot quand on passe du Tchad au Nord Cameroun (0,75). Le gène muté a été appelé HRr (reduced) au locus HR (Horn Reduction), l’allèle sauvage wild ayant pour symbole HR+. La fréquence q du gène muté a été estimée par le maximum de vraisemblance, en même temps que le coefficient de sélection s de l’hétérozygote, dans l’hypothèse où les coefficients qui affectent les homozygotes sont nuls. Par itération on obtient q =0,44 et s = 2,40. La supériorité des hétérozygotes sur les 2 homozygotes est donc très forte et on est en présence d’une situation d’équilibre stable où q prend une valeur proche de la valeur 0,50 attendue si les deux coefficients de sélection des homozygotes sont égaux.
