SUMMARY:Several methods are given for the calculation of the radius of gyration (R;>lI2 which is independent from excluded volume effects. Experiments on polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene confirmed the theoretical postulation of LIFSON that -this radius of gyration depends on the solvent and that it differs in general from the radius of gyration at the @-point. The solvent effect appears to be due to the interaction of the solvent with the chain links which is expressed by the apparent specific volume according to the theory of KOBATAKE and INAGAKI.
Virialkoeffkienten A, eine ungewohnliche Molekulargewichtsabhiingigkeit. SUMMARY:A series of amyloses was investigated in aqueous solution by means of light scattering and viscosity measuremendThe relations between the degree of polymerization and the radii of inertia, and the intrinsic viscosity [q] do not show strangeness and correspond to those of a coiled linear chain molecule. The second virial coefficient A, however shows an uncommon variation with the molecular weight. Comparative measurements of an amylose in different solvents gave clear relationships between the radius of inertia and the 2nd virial coefficient in all solutions which form stable solutions, whereas the A, value irf water does not agree with these relationships. The deviations are explained by the potential of hydrogen bonds.A.
SUMMARY:The molecular data of polyvinylcarbanilate in dioxane and a @-solvent have been determined by light scattering and viscosity measurement. The radii of gyration calculated from the intrinsic viscosity correspond well with the directly measured ones. The molecular weight dependence of the expansion coefficient u2 permits an improvement of the theory of KURATA, STOCKMAYER, and R O I G~~) .Up to values of a2 = 1,6 the K-ST-R theory is valid, at higher values deviations are observed. In dioxane and the @-solvent the KURATA-STOCKMAYER-plot of the intrinsic viscosity yields the same intercept but instead of the theoretical straight line a curve is obtained for dioxane solutions. The molecular weight dependence of the 2. virialcoefficient cannot be described by any of the known theories.
