Steps towards the improvement of the exactness of steel analysis by means of automatons. The ratio of the reproducibility between laboratories to the repeatability within laboratories indicates systematic errors between laboratories. The descriptions of reality of differing quality thus stated have to be improved by generation of analytical information with greatest accuracy possible. This is achieved by reference, a defined number of atoms of the analyte which, after a preceeding analysis and reconstitution of the test portion in liquid or solid solution is subject to the same physical and chemical conditions as the analytical sample. This allows to produce secondary reference samples adapted to the production. They are used in different ways to control the calibration of the instruments resulting in the maximal transfer of the confidence in the reference onto the analyte in the analytical sample.
The efficiency of analyzing nitrogen by optical emission spectroscopy was put to test in a first publication by six German laboratories of the iron and steel industry. Further experiences with this new method accumulated in the meantime will be reported here. By taking into account interelement effects both the residual scatter and BEC (background equivalent concentration) values for alloy steels have clearly been improved. The detection limit was determined at 6 μg/g by using the repeatability standard deviation in the range of the spectral background. Precipitates of titanium nitrides or carbon nitrides lead to high scatter of measured values. The long‐term stability of the spectrometric measuring system is largely dependent on the purity of the argon gas, transmission conditions in the spectral apparatus, the properties of the excitation unit, and the quality of the specimen surface. To all these items recommendations for practice are given.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
