Ich möchte mich hinsichtlich der Diskussion zum in Brüssel geplanten Haus der Europäischen Geschichte vor allem auf folgende Fragen konzentrieren: Wie legitim und sinnvoll sind geschichtskulturelle bzw. geschichtspolitische Vorhaben, die Identität durch Geschichte weniger diskursiv und reflexiv als vielmehr mehr oder minder zentralistisch und top-down generieren, wenn nicht inszenieren möchten? Wie legitim und sinnvoll sind solche Vorhaben, die weniger öffentlich hervorgebracht und begleitet werden, als vielmehr den Nötenoder guten Absichten -einer politischen Institution bzw. Elite sich verdanken?Beispielsweise war die 1958 eingeweihte Nationale Mahn-und Gedenkstätte Buchenwald der DDR ein weitgehend ohne öffentlichen Diskurs von oben herab und mit Hilfe verschiedener Formen inszenierter Öffentlichkeit realisiertes Projekt. Es präsentierte ein politisch-normatives Geschichtsbild, das den politischen Interessen und Bedürfnissen der politischen Klasse der DDR entsprach und das in vielerlei Hinsicht historische Erfahrungen und erfahrungsgeschichtliche wie historiographische Herausforderungen überging. Am Ende ließ sich die Kluft zwischen Institution und politisch-historischen Identitätsvorgaben nur mehr mit Druck -von verordneten Besuchen bis hin zur drastischen Präsentation und Kommunikation historischer Deutungenüberdecken. Intrinsisch motivierte Gedenkstättenbesucher hat das abgeschreckt, und ein überzeugender Antifaschismus konnte so nicht ausgebildet werden. Das sollte uns zu denken geben. Włodzimierz Borodziej hat gerade als überzeugter Europäer eindrücklich über das Elitenprojekt eines Hauses der Europäischen Geschichte gesprochen. Ich meine, dass er dabei implizit an die -exemplarischen -Sorgen eines Eugen Kogon, der Häftling im KZ Buchenwald war, angeknüpft hat. Eugen Kogon war ein deutscher Europäer der ersten Stunde nach der Zerschlagung des »Dritten Reichs«, und das KZ Buchenwald ist mit den vielen auf den Ettersberg deportierten Widerstandskämpfern, Politikern, Intellektuellen und Künstlern aus ganz Europa ein besonderer Ort der europeisation gewesen. Ehemalige Häftlinge wie Jorge Semprún oder Stéphane Hessel haben daran immer erinnert; und Pierre Sudreau, Buchenwald-Überlebender und Minister
