Part 1: Internet Crime InvestigationsInternational audienceOnline auctions are one of the most popular e-commerce applications. With the growth of online auctions, the amount of online auction fraud has increased significantly. Little work has focused on the criminal profiling of online auction fraudsters. This exploratory study uses multivariate behavioral analysis to profile 61 online auction fraud offenders based on their behavior. The relationships between offender behavior and personal characteristics are also examined. The results yield a taxonomy of online auction fraud offenders: (i) novice-moderately-active; (ii) intermediate-inactive; and (iii) experienced-active. Discriminant analysis of the personal characteristics of offenders yields 78.6% accurate identification of the offender type. The results demonstrate that (intrinsic) personal motivation, education level and age are the most significant characteristics of experienced-active offenders
Internet piracy has become a serious problem due to the expansion of network capacity and the availability of powerful hardware. To combat this problem, industry and law enforcement need a better understanding of the behavioral characteristics of Internet pirates. This paper describes a new conceptual framework for profiling Internet pirates. Also, it presents a taxonomy based on a survey of 114 Internet pirates. The taxonomy, which includes six types of downloaders and six types of file sharers with different behavioral characteristics, provides useful insights to forensic scientists and practitioners who are focused on combating Internet piracy.
The flash mob phenomenon has been well studied in sociology and other disciplines, but not in the area of digital forensics. Flash mobs sometimes become violent, perpetrate criminal acts and pose threats to public safely. For these reasons, understanding flash mob activities and identifying flash mob organizers are important tasks for law enforcement. This chapter presents a technique for extracting key online behavioral attributes from a popular Hong Kong discussion forum to identify topic authors-potential flash mob organizers-who belong to a vocal minority, but have the motivation and the ability to exert significant social influence in the discussion forum. The results suggest that, when attempting to interpret flash mob phenomena, it is important to consider the online behavioral attributes of different types of forum users, instead of merely using aggregated or mean behavioral data.
Cloud storage, also known as "one-click file hosting," is the easiest method to share files. It enables users to upload any files without providing any information or installing any software. This chapter discusses the development of the cloud storage ecosystem before and after the Megaupload case of 2012. The roles and relationships of the key contributors in the cloud storage ecosystem are highlighted. Also, the manner in which the key contributors generate revenue is discussed and revenue estimates are provided based on Internet traffic data and domain information.
