En este libro «Introducción a la medicina interna» se ofrece al lector información actualizada sobre diversos temas referentes a patologías que cursan como causa principal de alta morbimortalidad en el mundo contemporáneo. Todos de gran interés y vital importancia para la preservación de la salud. En el capítulo I, se enfoca en la discusión de los «conceptos elementales» relacionados con la medicina interna, las competencias profesionales del médico internista y la bioética en la práctica médica. En el capítulo II, se aborda el tema de las «enfermedades del sistema cardiovascular». Entre estas: La epidemiología de la enfermedad cardiovascular, los factores de riesgo de las enfermedades cardiovasculares, la hipertensión arterial, el edema agudo del pulmón, el paro cardiaco y la reanimación. En el capítulo III, se exponen algunas de las principales «enfermedades del sistema respiratorio». En primer lugar, se describe el aparato respiratorio humano, para seguidamente hacer referencia a la historia clínica en las patologías respiratorias y exponer con detalle la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica, el derrame plural y la disnea.
La meningitis es una enfermedad con gran incidencia que requiere atención por parte de la Salud Pública debido a las tasas de mortalidad y a las secuelas que deja en los pacientes que la padecen. Es característico en niños menores de 10 años en un porcentaje elevado, sin embargo, el empleo de vacunas y antibióticos de alto espectro han logrado disminuir la incidencia y han logrado mejorar las manifestaciones de la infección. El objetivo de ésta investigación es evaluar el rendimiento del lactato en el líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR) como biomarcador para diferenciar la meningitis bacteriana de la meningitis viral en niños, y definir una concentración óptima de lactato en el LCR que pueda considerarse significativa para la diferenciación. El análisis del LCR es una importante herramienta de diagnóstico para diferenciar la meningitis aguda bacteriana de la viral. Cuando la tinción de Gram y el cultivo son negativos, el lactato de LCR puede proporcionar información de diagnóstico pertinente, rápido y confiable para distinguir el tipo de meningitis. En tal sentido, el lactato de LCR tiene una alta sensibilidad y especificidad para diferenciar la meningitis bacteriana de la viral. Sin embargo, hoy en día, sigue siendo un desafío para la medicina, minimizar las secuelas y la mortalidad en pacientes que han padecido cualquier tipo de meningitis.
