A literatura revela uma possível ligação entre a periodontite e diferentes doenças sistêmicas em animais de companhia. Diante dessa questão, é necessário entender os fatores pertinentes a esta correlação. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre a importância da saúde bucal na prevenção de periodontite em animais de companhia, destacar os estágios da doença periodontal, e seus respectivos impactos na qualidade de vida e a sobrevivência dos animais afetados, assim como, sinais clínicos, diagnóstico e tratamento da doença. Para tal, realizou-se um estudo descritivo analítico, através de pesquisa bibliográfica, utilizando-se plataformas digitais, como Periódicos Capes, British Veterinary Association, Research Gate, PubMed, Science Direct, Scielo e BioOne. À luz da literatura, pode-se constatar que a periodontite é uma fonte potencial constante de infecção e considerada um fator de risco separado para alguns problemas cardiovasculares, respiratórios, endócrinos, anormalidades musculoesqueléticas e relacionadas ao sistema reprodutivo. Dependendo do estágio da doença periodontal, podem ocorrer alterações locais e sistêmicas. A utilização de alimentos, brinquedos e cremes dentais específicos são formas eficientes de prevenção. Todavia, a escovação diária dos dentes é o método mais eficaz para remover a placa bacteriana e manter a saúde clínica do animal. A odontologia se mostra tão importante quanto às demais áreas existentes na Medicina Veterinária, sendo o especialista nesta área, o profissional capacitado para tratar corretamente a doença periodontal, que acometem signicativas quantidades de cães e gatos adultos.
