This paper reports on the results of an assessment of the needs of homeless individuals in Boston. Results indicate that homeless individuals generally want and seek services to meet their needs. Services that were most wanted by the homeless included those related to meeting basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and jobs. Mentally ill individuals in this study who were homeless had a relatively low interest in mental health services and frequently failed to maintain contact with mental health providers. The study concludes that mentally ill individuals who are homeless need access to a comprehensive set of services including rehabilitation-related services.
Publicly funded multisite evaluations should help bring safe, effective interventions to the mental health and substance abuse treatment fields. Two principles, science‐based practice and stakeholder participation, drive multisite evaluations of behavioral interventions. We examine the roles of these principles in the five programs described in this volume and draw lessons for future studies.
