El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la contribución al calentamiento global de la producción de carbón activado obtenido a partir de residuos de aserraderos para su aplicación en refrigeradores solares por adsorción en la provincia de Mendoza, Argentina, y determinar la potencial reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) con relación al carbón activado de origen mineral que se utiliza habitualmente en estos sistemas. El estudio se aborda desde un enfoque de ciclo de vida, considerando las recomendaciones especificadas en las normas ISO 14040 y 14044. Los resultados muestran que la producción de carbón activado a partir de aserrín representa una reducción del impacto sobre el calentamiento global de 5 % en relación con el carbón activado de origen mineral, y que esta reducción puede llegar a 65 % si se contabilizan las emisiones evitadas de la quema del aserrín que se realiza con frecuencia en los aserraderos analizados.
