Advanced cognitive abilities have long been hypothesized to be important in mating. Yet, most work on sexual selection has focused on morphological traits and its relevance for cognitive evolution is poorly understood. We studied the spatial memory of lekking long-billed hermits (Phaethornis longirostris) and evaluated its role in lek territory ownership, the magnitude of its effect compared to phenotypic traits expected to influence sexual selection, and whether its variation is indicated in the structure of mating vocal signal. Spatial memory (the ability to recall the position of a rewarding feeder) was compared between “territorial” and “floater” males. Interestingly, although spatial memory and body size both positively affected the probability of lek territory ownership, our results suggest a stronger effect of spatial memory. Bill tip length (used as weapon in agonistic interactions) also showed a positive but smaller effect. Load lifting during vertical flight, a measure of physical performance relevant to agonistic interactions, had no effect on territory ownership. Finally, both body size and spatial memory were indicated in the structure of male song: body size negatively correlated with song lowest frequency, while spatial memory positively predicted song consistency. Together, our findings lend support for cognition as a sexual selection target.
We investigated the impact of nutrient intake on hydration biomarkers in cyclists before and after a 161 km ride, including one hour after a 650 mL water bolus consumed post-ride. To control for multicollinearity, we chose a clustering-based, machine learning statistical approach. Five hydration biomarkers (urine color, urine specific gravity, plasma osmolality, plasma copeptin, and body mass change) were configured as raw- and percent change. Linear regressions were used to test for associations between hydration markers and eight predictor terms derived from 19 nutrients merged into a reduced-dimensionality dataset through serial k-means clustering. Most predictor groups showed significant association with at least one hydration biomarker: (1) Glycemic Load + Carbohydrates + Sodium, (2) Protein + Fat + Zinc, (3) Magnesium + Calcium, (4) Pinitol, (5) Caffeine, (6) Fiber + Betaine, and (7) Water; potassium + three polyols, and mannitol + sorbitol showed no significant associations with any hydration biomarker. All five hydration biomarkers were associated with at least one nutrient predictor in at least one configuration. We conclude that in a real-life scenario, some nutrients may serve as mediators of body water, and urine-specific hydration biomarkers may be more responsive to nutrient intake than measures derived from plasma or body mass.
Spatial distribution of exotic fish species in the Guadiana river basin, with two new recordsThis work updates the spatial distribution of the exotic fish species in the Guadiana river basin. To this effect, 241 river stretches and 37 reservoirs and lakes were sampled, corresponding to 261 UTM 10 × 10 Km squares. A total of 12 exotic species were found, including two new species that had not been previously cited in the area, the channel cat-fish (Ictalurus punctatus) and the roach (Rutilus rutilus). These two species, related to lentic systems, had a very restricted distribution in the basin, probably as a consequence of its recent introduction. The expansion of the remaining exotic species was also confirmed. Some species as the pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus), the mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) or the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) have become common components of the fish community, not only in reservoirs but also in lotic systems.
Thirty-one soil samples from 14 different fields of Guatemala melon with vine decline symptoms were analyzed for the presence of organisms associated with the disease. With a soil-dilution plating method, only Macrophomina phaseolina was detected in five samples. With a melon bait plant technique, Olpidium bornovanus, often together with Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV), was found in nearly all the samples, corresponding with all the fields studied. Other pathogens that were detected less frequently included Pythium aphanidermatum, Monosporascus cannonballus, and Rhizoctonia solani. Consequently, O. bornovanus and MNSV were uniquely associated with disease occurrence and thus are the most probable cause of melon vine decline in the fields studied.
