The objectives of the study were to investigate the process of English writing from students of undergraduate international class, to describe problems faced by students in writing English, and to find out the factors which inhibit and improve their writing skills. There were six female respondents in international class. The study used documentation from the students’ work, open-ended questionnaire and interview as the instruments for data gathering. All the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative approach. The results of this study showed that all students used four stages in the process of English writing: planning, drafting, editing and final revision. The students’ English writing problems covered content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The factors which inhibit them in writing English included not being confident in writing English, not mastering grammar and vocabulary, and lack of practice in writing. The aspects which encourage them to write English were due to the demands as international class students, watching English movie, reading English books or journals, listening English songs and having ambition to acquire scholarship overseas.
Understanding an intended meaning of the expressive utterances becomes an important part in capturing text messages. This study focuses on classifying types of expressive, analyzing translation techniques of expressive utterances, and describing the subtitling accuracy in Aladdin movie script. The data were expressive utterances and their Indonesian translation taken from Aladdin movie script and their translation. The data were collected by means of content analysis, analyzed through descriptive qualitative method based on speech act theory of Searle (1985) and context situation theory of Brown and Yule (1983). The steps of analysis were identifying data, classifying data, describing the data, and drawing the conclusion. The results of the study show that there are eleven kinds of expressive utterances namely apologizing, thanking, condoling, congratulating, complaining, lamenting, protesting, deploring, boasting, complimenting, greeting, and welcoming. Besides, the study also found ten types of translation techniques: linguistics compression, established equivalence, literal translation, reduction, amplification, modulation, calque, transposition, adaption and compensation. The translation accuracy of expressive utterances used by translator in the movie script of Aladdin is an accurate translation.
This research concerns with declarative speech acts and their translation in Aladdin movie script (2019). The aims of this research are to describe the types of declarative utterances and their translation found in the movie script of Aladdin and to describe the pragmatics equivalence of declarative utterances found in the movie script. The data of this descriptive qualitative research are declarative speech acts and their translation in the movie script in 2 languages. The data collection method are comparison between English and Indonesian script. The data are analyzed using speech act theory of Searle (1969), and pragmatics equivalence by Barker's (1992) theory. The result of the study shows that there are eleven varieties of declarative speech acts, including convincing, surrendering, dismissing, naming, appointing, punishing, impressing, deciding, prohibiting, allowing, and classifying. This research also has the pragmatic equivalent of subtitling of speech acts in Aladdin movie that consist of data coherence and data implicature.
The article discusses the classification of translation methods used in movie scripts and their application in translation teaching. The data were words, phrases, clauses, and sentences written in Aladdin and Harry Potter movie scripts and their translation. The data, both written in source and target languages, were compared then analyzed using Spreadly and Catford theories. Based on the analysis, it was found that the writers used eight translation methods namely, word-for word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, communicative translation, idiomatic translation, free translation, and adaptation. In addition, every translation method can be used as the examples in translation teaching. The steps in applying the translation methods were explaining the theory, asking students to translate English script movie into Indonesian, discussing the translation results in pair, explaining examples of translation methods, asking students to apply the examples of every translation method three times, assessing the results to evaluate the students' progress, discussing the translation result in applying translation methods, and feedback given to students. By applying the research result in teaching of translation, both students and lecturers felt more confident in learning and pratice translating text from a source language into a target one.
