Foreign body ingestion or aspiration during dental procedure is a rare but serious mishap. Ingestion of blunt foreign objects is less hazardous, and the object is generally egested through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, but sharp objects like endodontic files may sometimes cause intestinal perforation. Safety during dental treatment of children cannot be overemphasized. The present paper reports a case of accidental ingestion of a file during pulpectomy and the retrieval by endoscopy. This article also discusses the management of such an untoward event.
Objectives: Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) comprises of a set of rare inherited lysosomal disorder which results in deposition of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in various tissues and organs resulting in disturbances in the developing structures. The aim of the study was to systematically record the oral findings of patients diagnosed with MPS and subsequently assess their oral health needs. Methodology: A cross- sectional study was conducted on patients diagnosed with MPS (n=57). Complete soft tissue and hard tissue examination was done and the findings recorded. DMFT or def indices were recorded in accordance with WHO criteria and methods. Results: The study showed that the patients diagnosed with MPS have higher oral health care needs owing to the anatomical and pathological changes. The study showed that the patients diagnosed with MPS had poor oral hygiene and high caries incidence. However, the number of filled teeth in spite of high caries index wassignificantly less which showed neglected oral care. Interpretation and Conclusion: The patients diagnosed with MPS have higher oral health care needs. Hence, regular dental evaluation and treatment must be incorporated in their health care regimen.
The Coronavirus pandemic has affected all walks of life in an unprecedented manner and in order to curb the spread of the same the government imposed a stringent lockdown. This led to profound effects on the education and training of medical programmes including dentistry. The study was conducted as a cross sectional online survey circulated among dental post graduate students in Karnataka, India. This study assesses the impact of COVID-19 on the dental post graduate training programme considering various factors like impact on teaching, training, dissertation, various problems and difficulties faced by the residents and reasons for stress induced among them. It also addresses suggestions which would help in alleviation of the problems. The Government must ensure that the concerned teaching organisations should take the required measures in order to relieve the residents of the various problems faced and provide rational solutions for the same.
Background and Objectives: Dentists are at a higher risk of acquiring COVID-19 than the lay persons due to exposure of aerosols and saliva. Hence, Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has updated the protocols that need to be implemented during COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed at evaluating the awareness among the dental practitioners regarding the interim changes in infection control protocols recommended by CDC during the pandemic and implementation of the same in the clinical practise. Materials and Methodology: Four hundred general dental practitioners and specialists participated in the study(n=400). The study was conducted as an anonymous web-based survey and responding to the survey was considered implicit consent. The survey had 17 questions addressing the respondents characteristics, awareness about the changes in protocol by CDC and implementation of the same in the waiting area, operatory and postoperative care respectively. Results: The results of the study indicated that the awareness amongst the dental health care professionals both in general and specialisedpractise regarding the interim infection control protocols was relatively good. However, there were certain protocols that werent implemented owing to some difficulties faced by the dentists in their clinical practise. Interpretation and Conclusion: In spite of the relatively good knowledge regarding the interim infection control protocols, implementation of certain protocols was found to be lacking. Hence, the awareness regarding these guidelines must be increased through various continuing education programs and short-term courses on infection control and cross infection management during covid-19 pandemic.
