Pre-operative templating is an unreliable and inaccurate tool. There is no relation between coronal deformity and accuracy of templating.

This work evaluates the suitability of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) granules (β-TCP/HA 70:30) as potential carriers for cell-guided bone therapy. The BCP granules were obtained by synthesis in the presence of wax, thermal treatment, crushing and sieving and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The cytocompatibility of the BCP granules was confirmed by a multiparametric cytotoxicity assay. SEM analysis showed human bone cell adhesion and migration after seeding onto the material. Rat subcutaneous xenogeneic grafting of granules associated to human bone cells revealed a more accentuated moderate chronic inflammatory infiltrate, without signs of a strong xenoreactivity. Histomorphometrical analysis of bone repair of defects in rat skulls (∅ = 5 mm) has shown that bone cell associated-BCP and autograft promoted a two- and threefold increase, respectively, on new bone formation after 45 days, as compared to BCP alone and blood clot. The increase in bone repair supports the suitability the biocompatible (70:30) BCP granules as injectable and mouldable scaffolds for human cells in bone bioengineering.

Objective:To compare intraoperative measurements of the knee with those obtained by magnetic resonance imaging, in order to validate the latter method for use in anthropometric studies.Materials and Methods:We studied 20 knees in 20 patients with osteoarthritis, all of whom underwent total arthroplasty between August and December of 2013. We took six measurements in the distal femur and two in the proximal tibia. Using the information system of the institution, we made the measurements on magnetic resonance imaging scans that had been obtained in the axial plane. Intraoperative measurements were obtained using a caliper, after the initial cuts made during the arthroplasty. The anatomical parameters determined by magnetic resonance imaging were the same as those determined by intraoperative measurement. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used in order to assess the level of agreement in anthropometric measurements of the knee performed by magnetic resonance imaging and by intraoperative measurement.Results:Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant correlation between the knee anthropometric parameters of the knee determined by intraoperative measurement and those determined by magnetic resonance imaging.Conclusion:The dimensions of osteoarthritic knees measured by magnetic resonance imaging were similar to those measured intraoperatively. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging can be considered a reliable method for use in large-scale anthropometric studies that will allow the available implants to be adapted and improved.

OBJETIVO: Apresentar um caso de hamartoma fibroso da infância em lactente ressecado tardiamente e se apresentando como lesão extensa, com envolvimento de elementos vasculares e neurais do plexo braquial. MÉTODOS: Estudo de caso clínico e revisão de literatura pertinente. RESULTADOS: Criança do sexo masculino, com massa tumoral axilar direita, irregular surgida aos 2 meses de idade e relacionada à administração da vacina BCG, sendo tratada com agentes anti-tuberculosos, sem resposta. Mediante biópsia a lesão foi diagnosticada como hamartoma fibroso infantil, e, após sofrer período de crescimento rápido, foi submetida à exérese cirúrgica completa. CONCLUSÃO: O hamartoma fibroso juvenil é um tumor benigno raro, tipicamente se apresentando no primeiro ano de vida em meninos, com localização mais comum no oco axilar. O diagnóstico diferencial se faz com tumores de partes moles em geral e, em casos de apresentação na axila direita, com adenopatias axilares causadas por reação à BCG. O tratamento é exerese completa da lesão e o prognóstico é favorável.
