Analisamos o imaginário social construído pelos órgãos de repressão de 1964 sobre a prisão do estudante Edival Nunes da Silva (UFPE), de apelido Cajá, a partir de seus documentos de informação, tais como os coletados pelo Ministério da Justiça e pelo Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI) à época. Além desses documentos, matérias do jornal Diario de Pernambuco sobre o caso e uma entrevista com Cajá também serviram como material base. Analisamos a racionalidade desse tipo de documento e dos publicados pelo Diario e, para isso, recorreu-se à noção de pressuposição da Análise do Discurso Crítica. A instituição “segurança” se propõe à formação técnico-científica e burocrática, sendo dominada por pressuposições – inimigo e medo ao comunismo. Para a Polícia Federal, Cajá mereceu ser preso por ser subversivo, comunista e por tentar refundar o Partido Comunista Revolucionário (PCR). Sua prisão foi considerada legal sob a ótica do Estado, enquanto que, para várias instituições sociais, ele foi sequestrado e torturado.
