Una proporción significativa de pacientes sometidos a cirugía abdominal prolongan su estancia hospitalaria debido al íleo paralítico postoperatorio (IPP) y la necesidad de utilizar nutrición parenteral (NP) con un evidente impacto en calidad percibida y costes asociados. El IPP es el proceso de obstrucción intestinal por fallo en la actividad propulsiva del tubo digestivo después de una cirugía. En algunos casos, el IPP puede prolongarse hasta provocar un cuadro clínico que ponga en riesgo la vida del paciente 1. La incidencia del IPP prolongado varía en función de múltiples factores: el procedimiento quirúrgico realizado, el tratamiento analgésico recibido y la habilidad del cirujano, entre otros. En España se estima que la incidencia de IPP después de una intervención quirúrgica es de entre un 0,5 y un 23% 2-3.
