Based on results obtained during 2000–2018 by field research, polls of colleagues, and OSINT analysis, features of distribution of the greater mole rat Spalax microphthalmus in the eastern forest steppe of Ukraine were considered. The studied part of the species’ range is unique and represents the northern range edge of the entire Spalacidae family and of European steppe faunal assemblages in general. In total, data on 146 record localities were amassed, including 13 localities in the fragmented and 133 in the continuous part of the range. The offshoots of the Central Russian Upland in the valley of the Psel river (east of Sumy Oblast) are the sites with the highest density of settlements, while the species’ type biotopes are steppe balka slopes. The abundance of the greater mole rat decreased from the east to the west, and its colonies are the most fragmented along the Dnipro River. The species occurs in steppe and meadow habitats of an area of at least 20–50 ha. Analysis of the current and former distribution of the greater mole rat revealed that the species range contracts from the west; earlier it was a common species in different regions of the Middle Dnipro Area (including Kyiv city), but the current range edge runs along the line connecting Buryn – Nedryhailiv – Lokhvytsia – Myrhorod – Hadiach – Zinkiv – Zaliznychne. Isolated settlements exist in adjacent territories, particularly in Ichnia Raion of Chernihiv Oblast, and Lubny, Khorol, and Kobeliaky Raions of Poltava Oblast. The study showed that the species’ range contracted by two times to 35,000 km2 for the last 100 years, which includes only 430,000 ha of suitable habitats (15% of the range), allowing the existence here of 86,000–215,000 individuals. In fact, the species remained only in habitats that have been minimally affected by arable farming and other forms of active agricultural use. Besides, the species shows a clear confinement to habitats located near human settlements such as untilled lands, pastures with moderate grazing, waste and neglected lands, which constitute a separate group of transformed and semi-natural habitats. Formally, this allows the greater mole rat to be considered as a synanthropic species, because its inhabited biotopes, beside the zone of offshoots of the Central Russian Upland, have remained only near villages and along roads. The species also has an important biocoenotic role due to its burrowing activity and as prey of predatory birds (e.g., of the long-legged buzzard and Eurasian eagle owl) and mammals. The feeding period of the offspring of these predators generally coincides with the aboveground activity of mole rats, which lasts during May–July with a peak in June. Aboveground activity is mainly related to the resettlement of mole rats to new sites and dispersal of the young, due to which they became victims of predators.
Ivan Verkhratsky and his review on bat biology and on the bat fauna of Galicia (1869).-Zagorodniuk, I., Parkhomenko, V., Kharchuk, S.-The first publication about bats in Ukrainian was discovered. It was written by the famous Galician naturalist Ivan Verkhratsky for the Pravda journal in 1869. This work is an evidence that the investigator carried out not only linguistic but also natural history research. The work probably played an important role in the education, development of knowledge, and research on the biology of this little-known group of animals. The article contains important information about morphology, anatomy, ecology, reproduction, behavior, and taxonomy of bats. Besides, it contains unique information about the local fauna, obtained by summarizing of previously published works and original data. The author also made a considerable contribution into development of the Ukrainian scientific zoonymics and proposed Ukrainian names for all genera and species described in his review. Verkhratsky's data have not only historical value but they are also important for the development of nomenclature, as well as for analysis of fauna long-term changes. He provided important information on the abundance and distribution of species that allows to compare it with current statuses of populations, and analyze values of fauna changes.
Bats of the forest steppe of Sumy Oblast: old records and new findings. -V. Parkhomenko. -Generalized information on 9 bat species of the south of Sumy Oblast is presented based on own materials (29 specimens of 7 bat species from 3 localities) and on data from literature sources and catalogues of zoological collections (123 specimens of 9 species from 16 localities). The autumn mating of Vespertilio murinus was recorded in the region for the first time. Records of E. serotinus are clarified, which should be considered as records of E. lobatus. New findings of bats are reported from three localities. Most of the new records (51.1 %) are from the autumn, less from the summer (28.9 %) and the least from the spring (15.5 %). Most of the records are of P. auritus and M. daubentonii (34.9 %). New findings of bats in most cases were recorded during hunting (14 specimens), and, according to the literature, during daytime (43 specimens) and wintering (36 specimens). In total, 85.5 % of bats were recorded during the warm period of the year (April to November). More than the half of new records (17 specimens, 58.6 %) is related to anthropogenic habitats. Metric data (forearm length) are presented for 7 species and compared with data from other regions.
The details of biography and scientific works of Boris Valkh (1876–1942), one of the leading zoologists who worked in eastern Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century, were analysed. Boris Valkh worked at the interface of zoology, plant protection, and epidemiology and he was a leading specialist in controlling the abundance of economically important groups of rodents and insects (plant protection stations) and an epidemiologist (studying zoonoses). At the same time, he was a nature protector, one of the key organizers of nature reserves in the southeast of Ukraine (Kamiani Mohyly, Bilosaraiska Kosa). The main attention in this review is paid to Valkh's research into zoology (ornithology, entomology, and theriology), and his work upon creation of zoological collections, including the one in the Bakhmut Museum of Local Lore, which was organized with his participation. All of these developments made by the scientist are considered along with details of his biography analysed using family archives and by conversations with Valkh’s descendents, including his grandson Boris Valkh, granddaughter Olympiada Gryshchenko, and great-grandson Sergei Valkh. Significant clarifications and important additions to the biography of Boris Valkh have been made, in particular regarding his education (once in Pavlohrad Gymnasium and twice in Kharkiv University), wife and children, as well as his long-term trips to Turkestan and Azerbaijan. The location of "Hory-Mohyly hamlet", from which most of the zoological samples collected by the Valkhs are derived, is clarified and determined as the same place that was marked on ancient maps as "Horemohylove" The history of the species Mus sergii described by Boris Valkh and its type locality were analysed. The information about the history of accumulation and further fate of his and his son Sergey’s zoological collections including mammal specimens from Hory-Mohyly is summarized. Unique original photographs from the family archives have been used, for most of which the dates and places of taking were determined. Pictures of collections and original zoological labels are also presented.
