O ambulatório de pets não convencionais (PNC) é algo relativamente recente. Um levantamento realizado sobre atendimento de animais selvagens, entre 2015-2019 pela Unidade de Atendimento Clínico do IFNMG campus Salinas – MG, apontou a ocorrência de 14 PNC e 4 silvestres de vida livre. Sendo assim, objetivou-se a realização de amostragem de animais silvestres na região do Hospital Veterinário (HV) do IFNMG para avaliar se o ambulatório de animais silvestres comporta as práticas de ensino, pesquisa e extensão. Foi disponibilizado questionário online, de adesão voluntária e anônima, nas redes sociais, ficando acessível de 18 de janeiro a 26 de fevereiro de 2021. Foram obtidas 40 respostas, com o maior público de Salinas, seguido de Janaúba, Taiobeiras, Novorizonte, Nova Porteirinha, Montes Claros, Fruta de Leite e Araçuaí. No total amostrou-se 145 animais, sendo 53,1% aves, seguida por 21,4% peixes, 16,5% mamíferos e 9% répteis; quando questionados se receberam instruções sobre o manejo e registro do animal 57.5% responderam que “não”, 37,5% que “sim” e 5% optaram por não responder (NR); quanto a escolha da espécie, 42,5% responderam por razões sentimentais, para companhia ou facilidade de manejo, 25% pela admiração ou pela saúde, 12,5% que ganharam, 10% que adotaram, 5% pelo trabalho ou hobbie e 5% NR. Conclui-se HV tem potencial de demanda para atendimento em PNC, demonstrando necessidade de trabalhar o ensino na graduação do curso com disciplinas voltadas para a área, incentivando futuros profissionais especializados em animais silvestres, disseminando conhecimento e conscientização aos tutores sobre cuidados para com seus pets.
