Este artículo aborda el problema de ‘lo monstruoso’ en la representación de víctimas y victimarios en el espacio público. Reflexionamos sobre la exhibición que figuras vinculadas a lo monstruoso han tenido en el último tiempo en diversas apuestas museográficas alemanas, poniendo énfasis en la dificultad que conlleva la representación del perpetrador. Mostraremos cómo este problema implica la adopción de una postura por parte del museo, que por lo general ha oscilado entre enfatizar el ‘horror’ o la ‘monstruosidad’ de los actos del perpetrador, o el aspecto ‘humano’ o ‘corriente’ del sujeto que perpetra, con la finalidad de comprender de mejor manera los factores históricos que explican determinada interpretación de las acciones cometidas. Veremos cómo ambas posiciones pueden ser problemáticas y cómo el análisis de los casos muestra que es necesario dar lugar a respuestas estéticas particulares a cada exhibición; a saber, se hará evidente la necesidad de cuestionar cualquier a priori histórico al analizar y representar la violencia de Estado.
