ABSTRACTAlteration of climatic conditions and the urban heat island effect (UHI) are consequences of increased human population and activities in urban zones. Determining the magnitude of the UHI is important to improve urban planning in medium-size cities like Querétaro. Increase and conservation of vegetated areas is a mitigation option for UHI. Here we characterized both the UHI and the role of vegetation cover over temperature regtemperature and relative humidity were measured with data loggers at a 30 min time step from June 2012 to May 2013. In order to evaluate the morphostructural variability of the Black Creole goat (BCG), the present study was carried out in a population of 226 animals from eight localities and 14 morphometric variables were taken. Descriptive statistics for the variables were obtained and 10 of these presented variation coefficients of less than 10%. The degree of harmony in the morphology of the population was determined by the number of positive correlations with significant differences (p < 0.05), including a correlation test using Spearman’s method. In order to reduce the matrix of variables, a principal components analysis was performed, and it was evaluated based on Kaiser’s criteria (eigenvalue > 1). Finally, a hierarchical analysis of conglomerates using Ward’s method was performed using the Euclidean distance to evaluate the distances among localities. Morphometric variables were also included to visualize the relationship among the localities and their average per variable. The results showed that the animals evaluated presented a certain degree of homogeneity and maintained a highly harmonic model. The BCG population showed a high aptitude for milk production, which confirmed the zootechnical purpose of the breed. The BCG populations evaluated maintain similar morphostructural profiles specific to them that can distinguish this population from other animal breeds.
SUMMARYThe studies on reconstruction of paleoclimatic series play an important role in analyzing regional climate variability when instrumental information is not available. Tree-ring samples from stands of Pinus durangensis, Pinus cooperi and Pinus lumholtzii were used to generate chronologies in order to reconstruct and analyze the historical hydroclimatic variability for the region of San Dimas, Durango, Mexico. A principal component analysis (PCA) indicates that those series showed a common variability; subsequently, a regional series was developed covering a period of 294 years. An analysis of response function suggests that the most important climate variable influencing tree growth was the seasonal winter-spring precipitation (January-June), which accounted for 52 % of the variability. Reconstruction of the variability of the winter-spring precipitation for the last three centuries was possible. Such a profile allowed us to identify important drought periods (1740-1746, 1766-1780, 1785-1786, 1819-1824, 1890-1900, 1935-1940, 1950-1957 and 2011-2015). Because of their extension, the periods 1766-1780, 1890-1900 and 1950-1957 were the longest. Based on historical records, four events of severe drought (1785-1786, 1935-1940, 1891-1902 and 1950) were associated with strong havoc in central Mexico and their effects were extended to northern Mexico. In addition, a wavelet coherence analysis suggests a strong relationship between the reconstructed precipitation (Winter-Spring) and NIÑO 3 SST (December to February) in phase from 1770 to 1978 with frequencies from 1 to 5 years, ENSO has significantly modulated climate variability in this region of the state of Durango.Key words: chronologies, reconstructed precipitation, drought, ENSO.
ABSTRACTLimiting the amount of sun radiation reduces photosynthetic activity, causing stress and morphological and/or physiological changes in plant development. This study analyzed the stress effect caused by two levels of competition in Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl half-sib families: high inter-family (environment II) and high intra-family (environment III) competition, compared with a low level of competition (environment I). Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, and chlorophyll-b content, plus the chlorophyll a/b ratio, were quantified as an indicator of stress level in 10-month-old plants using the Barnes method. Plants were established in a common garden test under a split-plot design with four replications and three individuals per plot. Total chlorophyll was significantly higher (P<0.05) in environment I; no differences (P>0.05) were observed between the other competition environments. A separate analysis of chlorophylls showed lower chlorophyll-a content in plants surrounded by genetically-similar plants (environment III) as opposed to geneticallydifferent ones (environment II); conversely, chlorophyll-b content was higher in genetically-similar plants (environment III). In conclusion, intra-genotypic competition was generally stronger than inter-genotypic competition, under high levels of stress. PALABRAS CLAVE:Clorofila total, clorofila a, clorofila b, clorofila a/b, competencia, densidad.
