A total of 123 dogs grouped by sex, age, and skull type were evaluated. The mean lacrimal production was 16.4 ± 1.5 mm/min, with a range of 11 to 20 mm/min, and without statistical difference due to sex and age; however, the lacrimal production of brachycephalic dogs was significantly higher (17.0 ± 1.2 mm/ min, p<0.05) that mesocephalic (16.4 ± 1.7 mm/min) and dolichocephalic dogs (15.6 ± 1.1 mm/min).
Palabras clave: espermatozoide, epidídimo, canino, criopreservación de semen ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to determine the maximum time to recover and cryopreserve spermatozoa from the tail of canine epididymis post orchiectomy. The methyl metracrilate (mmc) is an acrylic resin used in molds for the manufacture of dental prothesis and may have the function of connective stabilizing bar in the reduction of bone fractures, allowing the insertion of pins in diffent planes. The objective of the present research was to demonstrate that the mmc may work like a external skeletal locking device to fix bone fractures, away from the fracture focus, and therefore, avoiding much of the usual complications observed when other techniques are used. A closed fracture reduction was performed in 10 dogs, with ages varying froms 5 months and 7 years that presented a fracture in the tibia, the fibula, the ulna or the radius bones. All animals were intervened and X rayed every 16 days until the extraction of the external fixation was done on the 6 th week post surgery. The recovery of the fracture line was obtained as well as an adequate osteosynthesis that allowed the bone recuperation.
Normal intraocular pressure in mongrel dogs (Canis familiaris) was determined by the tonometry technique. A total of 60 healthy dogs between 1 to 4 years old were selected (30 males and 30 females). The results obtained with the Shiotz tonometer revealed that the values of intraocular pressure were 24.10 ± 1.02 and 24.30 ± 1.09 mm Hg for the right and left eye, respectively. No significative differences were found between right and left eye, or sexes. However, in males the right eye had a higher (P<0.05) intraocular pressure (26.48 + 1.27) than the left eye (20.15 + 1.59 mm Hg) .
Fifteen ejaculates from 4 mature dogs were used. Each sample was divided in aliquots and three methods of adding glycerol were used (T1: at the beginning; T2; at the beginning and at the end; T3: at the end of the cooling process). Semen samples were packed in 0.5 ml straws and frozen in liquid nitrogen. The post-thawing progressive motility and the functional integrity of membrane were evaluated. None statistical difference was observed due to the three treatments, indicating that the process of cryopreservation can be simplified by adding all the glycerol at the beginning of the cooling curve.
