A framework of six steps for engaging young children in research is presented in this chapter. This framework was built through collaboration with a team of international researchers funded by the Bernard van Leer Foundation (Johnson, Hart, & Colwell, 2014a and b). Relevant literature and theoretical underpinning is presented with discussion of how creative participatory approaches are relevant to understanding and interacting with children's geographies. The framework addresses key issues facing researchers wishing to engage young children in research processes and offers ways to overcome some of the challenges researchers may face. In order to illustrate the six steps, a selection of case studies which provide examples of how experts from a wide range of international contexts have worked with children are presented. These case studies have been selected to be of particular relevance to geographic field research with young children and have been developed and tested by experts from a wide range of international contexts.

The frequently examined hypothesis proposed by Kohlberg that logical development is a necessary but insufficient condition of moral development is examined in cross-age analyses of approximately 225 adolescents and adults, aged 16 to SO years. Two kinds of moral scores-one representing Kohlberg's system and the other, an interactional formulation-and three scores of formal operations based on Piagetian tasks are used. To explicate the logical/moral relation, controls for age, socioeconomic status, IQ, or educational levels were applied to correlational analyses within sex groups. Also, a sex-differentiated "structural" analysis was done. Neither set of results was consistent with Kohlberg's hypothesis.A classic controversy among moral philosophers concerning the position and role of logic in morality is now before psychologists. Ultimately at stake is the true essence of morality. This article draws on learning from the YOUR World Research project in Ethiopia and Nepal, which uses the socioecological Change-scape framework to understand how participants in research need to be understood within a landscape of changing institutional, environmental, and political contexts. The article explores whether trustful relationships, ownership, and commitment can bring about more effective societal change through research. Through group discussion and reflective perspectives, the authors draw out possible indicators of successful partnership from the different contexts in which YOUR World Research was working. These include histories of interpersonal relationships; shared vision and motivations; building ownership; shared platforms and spaces for dialogue; and flexibility to respond to shocks and changes in context. The article suggests that whilst being realistic about the power and politics of partnership, there are mechanisms in partnership models that can help support high-quality rigorous research whilst creating impact at local, national, and international levels.
