OBJETIVO: Analisar os fatores associados à percepção negativa de saúde em idosos brasileiros. MÉTODOS: Estudo de base populacional com delineamento transversal realizado no ano de 2009, em três cidades do Brasil. A amostra estratificada de forma aleatória simples foi composta de 909 adultos de 60 a 91 anos. Na identificação dos fatores associados com a percepção negativa de saúde (PNS), foi realizada análise bruta e mutivariável por estimativas das Razões de Prevalência (RP), por meio da regressão de Poisson; p < 0.05. RESULTADOS: A prevalência para PNS foi de 49,6%, e após análise multivariada foi observado associação para os homens com o aumento da idade RP = 1,03 (IC = 1,01 - 1,06), risco de desnutrição RP = 1,66 (IC = 1,13 - 2,43) e incapacidade funcional RP = 1,79 (IC = 1,21-1,77). Para as mulheres, o uso superior a dois medicamentos RP = 1,41 (IC = 1,13 - 2,52), hipertensão arterial RP = 1,52 (IC = 1,43 - 1,97) e a incapacidade funcional RP = 1,36 (IC = 1,13 - 1,86). CONCLUSÕES: Quase a metade dos idosos possuem uma PNS, de maneira que ações preventivas de diminuição ao uso de medicamentos e comportamentos que favoreçam melhores condições nutricionais devem estar atreladas às políticas públicas à promoção da autonomia funcional e do bem-estar dos idosos.

Alterations of balance are a growing public health problem as they affect one in three adults over the age of 65, and one in two over the age of 80. Identifying the factors that affect postural stability is essential in designing specific interventions to maintain the independence and mobility of older people. The aim of this review was to understand the use of accelerometers in order to assess the balance in older people. Analyzing the most appropriate evaluation methodology and protocolizing it will optimize the processes of early identification of balance alterations. However, quantitative assessment methods of balance are usually limited to a laboratory environment, a factor that can be overcome by accelerometers. A systematic search was carried out across eight databases where accelerometers were employed to assess balance in older people. Articles were excluded if they focused on sensor design and did not measure balance or apply the technology on targeted participants. A total of 19 articles were included for full-text analysis, where participants took part in the balance evaluation monitored by accelerometers. The analysis of spatio-temporal parameters and the magnitude of the accelerations recorded by the devices were the most common study variables. Accelerometer usage has potential to positively influence interventions based on physical exercise to improve balance and prevent falls in older people.

Background: Development and evaluation of an accelerometers technique for collecting data for asses balance had reported difficulty due to equilibrium reactions and continuous bursts. The aim of this study is to determine the reliability and internal consistency of accelerometric measurements, related to static equilibrium and gait in children aged 6 to 12 years. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study involved 70 healthy children (50% girls) with a mean age of 9 years old. At the height of the 4th lumbar vertebra and directly on the skin, an accelerometer was placed on each participant. All of them had to complete four trials three times: balancing on one leg with eyes closed and eyes open, dynamic balancing on one leg on a foam mat, and normal gait. Results: Results show that tests performed in older children had higher internal consistency than those performed in younger children (vertical axis r = 0.82, sagittal axis r = 0.77, and perpendicular axis r = 0.74). Tests performed in children aged 8 years or older presented a strong correlation between trials (r > 0.71). The three static equilibrium tests obtained reliability values between 0.76 y 0.84. On the contrary, gait test obtained inferior and poorer results (0.6 < r < 0.71). Conclusions: This method of assessment obtained positive results as an instrument for the quantitative assessment of balance in school-aged children. Values obtained for the three one-leg balance and static tests,were more strongly correlated than the normal gait test for all axes.

THIS REVIEW SUMMARIZES THE EVIDENCE BASE FOR USING ACTIVE RECOVERY, COLD WATER IMMERSION, WHOLE-BODY VIBRATION, NEUROMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION, AND COMPRESSION GARMENTS, AS EXERCISE RECOVERY AIDS IN SOCCER, AND WHERE POSSIBLE, PROVIDES PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING USAGE.
