The age and growth of the scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini (Griffith and Smith, 1834) were estimated from rings on the vertebral centrum in 101 individuals (51 females and 50 males) from 260 organisms obtained from commercial fisheries off the coast of Michoacán, Mexico (18º10'N, 103º10'W). Results show that immediately after birth, a first ring is formed. Later we observed that two rings are formed each year, one between June and July and the other between November and December. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were, for females, L∞ = 353.3 cm, K = 0.156 cm yr–1, t0 = –0.633 years, b = 2.8 and W∞ = 269.92 kg; and, for males, L∞ = 336.4 cm, K = 0.131 cm yr–1, t0 = –1.09 years, b = 2.87 and W∞ = 187 kg. According to these results, a female 335.6- cm-long would be 18.6 years old and a male of 244.3 cm would be 8.8 years old.
ABSTRACTAlbinism is a genetic condition in which the melanin pigment protein is either absent or nonfunctional and has occasionally been reported in chondrichthyes. Total albinism in an 18.42 g female adult dwarf stingray, Urotrygon nana, with an 81 mm disc width is described in this paper. The subject was caught using bottom trawl methods 40 m deep off Puerto Madero, Chiapas, Gulf of Tehuantepec, eastern Pacific (14° 31ʼ 6ʼʼ N -92° 26ʼ 75ʼʼ W). The albino morphometric characteristics were compared with those of normal specimens of the same sex. This paper represents the first record of this abnormality in the family Urotrygonidae.
Background. Seven remora species are described for the Eastern Pacific, of them Remora brachyptera has not been confirmed in South Mexican Pacific. Goals. The aim of this note is to report the presence of R. brachyptera on the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Methods. The specimen was collected during sportfish activities in May 2013 in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Results. This species was identified by having 17 laminae in the cephalic disc and the dorsal fin that originates above the anal fin, dorsal fin with 27 rays, pectoral fin with 23 rays, cephalic disc length 32.6% standard length, and truncated tail. Conclusions. This is first record of R. brachyptera in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
Sphyrna gilberti is a large hammerhead shark described off South Carolina and data distribution on other regions of the Western Atlantic are unknown. An adult male with a total length of 240 cm was collected in 2021 on Campeche, Southwestern Gulf of México. The precaudal vertebral count of the examined individual was 89, and a large head and a robust caudal peduncle were observed. This study documents the first record of S. gilberti in Mexican waters.
This is the first report of coexistence of pedunculate barnacles, Conchoderma auritum and C. virgatum in the mouth, and with the copepod Gloiopotes huttoni in the precaudal zone, on the black marlin, Istiompax indica, a as host. This is also the first note of a new non-mammalian host for C. auritum. The host specimen was caught in sport fishing in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, eastern Pacific. A review of registered occurrences of the genus Conchoderma in species of the fish family Istiophoridae is provided.
