Kutatásunk témája annak bemutatása, hogy miként érvényesülnek a fenntarthatóság elvei a pénzügyek terén. Az Európai Környezeti Információs és Megfigyelő Hálózat a fenntarthatóság fogalmának meghatározásánál az ENSZ 1987-es definíciójára támaszkodik, vagyis a fenntarthatóság célja olyan fejlődési folyamatnak a fenntartása melynek eredménye képen a jelen társadalmi szükségletei maradéktalanul kielégítésre kerülnek, szem előtt tartva hogy a felnövekvő generációk részére mindaz megadassék, ami az Ő jövőbeni szükségleteik kielégítését is lehetővé teszik. Egyre fontosabbá válik, hogy mit hagyunk az unokáinkra, vagyis az utókorra. A fenntarthatóság kérdéskörével gyakran együtt emlegetik a társadalmi jólét fogalmát is, melyet az elmúlt időszakban szintén átértékeltünk, elég ha a Covid-19 járványra gondolunk melynek hatására többek között az egészség védelme, megőrzése előtérbe került az anyagi jóléthez képest. Az orosz-ukrán konfliktus hatására a biztonság sokkal fontosabbá vált sokak számára, mint az anyagi jó lét. A jólét kérdéskörének változását mutatják a szakirodalomban használt kifejezések változása is vagyis már nem „wealth” vagy a „welfare” szó használatáról beszélünk, hanem mindinkább a „well-being” kifejezés kerül előtérbe. Mindazon által a fenntartható „jóllét” megvalósítása elválaszthatatlan a gazdasági folyamatoktól és azok pénzügyi vetületeitől. A fenntartható gazdálkodás, működés megvalósításához nem csak a megfelelő technológiák és folyamtok szükségesek, hanem ezek megvalósítását elősegítő pénzügyi megoldásokra is. Az elmúlt években, de különösen a Párizsi Klímaegyezmény aláírását követően felgyorsultak azok az események melyek minden szinten és szereplő részére megfogalmazták azon cselekvési területeket, melyek szerepet játszhatnak akár közvetlenül vagy közvetetten a fenntarthatóság mielőbbi megvalósításában.
