This paper proposes a new interpretation for primary thickening in monocotyledons. The anatomy of the vegetative organs of the following species was examined: Cephalostemon riedelianus (Rapataceae), Cyperus papyrus (Cyperaceae), Lagenocarpus rigidus, L. junciformis (Cyperaceae), Echinodorus paniculatus (Alismataceae) and Zingiber officinale (Zingiberaceae). The endodermis with meristematic activity was observed in the root of all the species, in the stem of Cyperus, Cephalostemum and Lagenocarpus rigidus, and in the leaf trace of Cyperus and leaf of Echinodorus. Considering the continuity of tissues through the root, stem and leaf, the authors conclude that in the stem the pericycle remains active throughout the life of the plant as the generator of the vascular tissue. The "Primary Thickening Meristem" is in fact the pericycle plus the endodermis and its derivatives (or only the pericycle). Close to the stem apex, the assemblage of seems to be a unique meristem, giving rise to the inner cortex and vascular tissues.
The pantropical family Eriocaulaceae includes ten genera and c. 1,400 species, with diversity concentrated in the New World. The last complete revision of the family was published more than 100 years ago, and until recently the generic and infrageneric relationships were poorly resolved. However, a multi-disciplinary approach over the last 30 years, using morphological and anatomical characters, has been supplemented with additional data from palynology, chemistry, embryology, population genetics, cytology and, more recently, molecular phylogenetic studies. This led to a reassessment of phylogenetic relationships within the family. In this paper we present new data for the ITS and trnL-F regions, analysed separately and in combination, using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. The data confirm previous results, and show that many characters traditionally used for differentiating and circumscribing the genera within the family are homoplasious. A new generic key with characters from various sources and reflecting the current taxonomic changes is presented. Key words: anatomy, ITS, phylogenetics, pollen, trnL-trnF.
They are epiphytes. The rhizomes are horizontal and present intracortical roots. They present uniseriated epidermis or storied cork; cortex with isodiametrical cells, idioblasts with raphide-sacs, and starch grains; uniseriated endodermis presenting thin-walled cells; uniseriated or multiseriated pericycle with thin or thick-walled cells; vascular cylinder presenting collateral vascular bundles. The adventitious roots are intracortical or external. The latter have multiseriated velamen; presenting idioblasts with raphide-sacs, cortical intercellular spaces, exodermis with thick-walled cells; uniseriated endodermis with thin or thick-walled cells; uniseriated pericycle with thin-walled cells; reduced vascular cylinder. The intracortical roots differ of the external ones for...
The scale-like staminodes present in the species of Paepalanthoideae indicate a probable reduction of the outer whorl of stamens present in species of Eriocauloideae. Among the Paepalanthoideae genera, Rondonanthus, which is probably basal, shows vascularized staminodes in their pistillate flowers. The occurrence of nectariferous pistillodes in staminate flowers and that of nectariferous portions of the style in pistillate flowers of Paepalanthoideae are emphasized as nectariferous structures in Eriocaulaceae.
-(Leaf anatomy of Tillandsia L. (Bromeliaceae) from "Campos Gerais", Paraná, Brazil). The leaf anatomy of Tillandsia crocata (E. Morren) Baker, T. gardneri Lindl., T. geminiflora Brongn., T. linearis Vell., T. lorentziana Griseb., T. mallemontii Glaziou ex Mez, T. recurvata L., T. streptocarpa Baker, T. stricta Soland ex Sims, T. tenuifolia L., T. usneoides L., and Tillandsia sp. were studied. They occur in the "Campos Gerais", State of Paraná, southern Brazil. In surface view epidermis presents cells with linear to sinuous anticlinal walls, silica bodies and scales covering anomocytic stomata. Epidermis and first hypodermal layer are lignified. Transversal view reveals below surface stomata, aqüiferous parenchyma, longitudinal air canals and collateral vascular bundles with double sheath. These anatomical features are xeromorphic and usually considered as an adaptation to the epiphytic habit of the atmospheric Tillandsia. Moreover, they could be also used for diagnostic purposes. Leaf shape in cross section, cuticle ornamentation, epidermal scale structures, thickening of the epidermal wall cells, stomata distribution, structure and distribution of the aqüiferous parenchyma cells, presence of air canals, and size of vascular bundle could help the taxonomic delimitation of the species within the genus.Key words -Bromeliaceae, canopy, epiphytes, leaf anatomy, Tillandsia RESUMO -(Anatomia foliar de Tillandsia L. (Bromeliaceae) dos Campos Gerais, Paraná, Brasil).
-(Anatomy of Tillandsia L. (Bromeliaceae) scapes from the "Campos Gerais" of Paraná, Brazil). The anatomy of Tillandsia crocata (E. Morren) Baker, T. gardneri Lindl., T. geminiflora Brongn., T. linearis Vell., T. lorentziana Griseb., T. mallemontii Glaziou ex Mez, T. recurvata L., T. streptocarpa Baker, T. stricta Soland ex Sims, T. tenuifolia L., and Tillandsia sp. scapes were studied. They occur in the "Campos Gerais", state of Paraná, southern Brazil. They are epiphytics on trunks or rock slopes. Scapes are both bent or straight revested by bracts and they grow up from the center of the foliar rosette. There are two patterns of distribution concerning the vascular bundles, one of them the peripherical bundles are condensed in the vascular cilyndre surrounded and/or immersed in a sclerotic cilyndre, the pericycle. The other presents vascular bundles scattered but concentred on the vascular cylindre periphery, total or partially involved in a fibrous sheath without a sclerotic cylinder. Most of these species presents scapes with thickened wall hypodermic and epidermic cells, and colateral vascular bundles that are total ou partially involved by fibers. The presence of thickened wall cells, hypodermis, raphids idioblasts, mucilage and air channel are adaptatives characters related to the epiphytic habit. The kind of thickness of the epidermic cells, hypodermis and pericycle; the distribution of vascular bundles, and the presence of composite vascular bundles could help species delimitation into the genus. It is presented a identification key of Tillandsia to the anatomic features of the scape.Key words -anatomy, Bromeliaceae, scape, Tillandsia RESUMO -(Anatomia de escapos de Tillandsia L. (Bromeliaceae) dos Campos Gerais do Paraná, Brasil).
