Introdução: Os medicamentos exercem papel essencial na promoção e recuperação da saúde, auxiliando na preservação e qualidade de vida do usuário. Objetivos: O estudo avalia o conhecimento da população em relação aos medicamentos genéricos, comparado aos de referência e similares, e os princípios da intercambialidade. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo investigativo aleatório realizado na população em geral, em 240 pessoas da região metropolitana de Belém/PA. Resultados e discussão: Observamos que, independente do sexo e idade, os de maior renda familiar (49,6%) demostraram conhecimento sobre as diferenças entre os medicamentos (p < 0,0001). 65,9% sabem diferenciar os tipos de medicamentosgenéricos, referência e similarpela embalagem (p < 0,0001), e 74,8% já receberam alguma informação sobre medicamentos genéricos (p < 0,0001). Sobre o consumo dos medicamentos, os genéricos são preferência (48,8%) (p < 0,0245), onde 41,5% compram por prescrição (p < 0,0001), 66,7% disseram que já compraram o medicamento pelo preço mais em conta. 71,5% relataram confiar nos medicamentos genéricos (p < 0,0223), 69,9% acreditam na qualidade e segurança do medicamento genérico, e 54,5% acreditam na sua eficácia igual aos de referência. Conclusões: É necessário maior informação quanto ao uso correto de medicamentos e cabe aos profissionais de saúde se atualizarem e orientar da forma correta, evitando automedicação e outros riscos à saúde.Palavras-chave: Genérico, Similar, Intercambialidade de medicamentos.
