Background: Balance in the human body is maintained by the coordinated integration of sensory input from somatosensory, vestibular and visual system. This coordinated response to stimuli must be transmitted to appropriate muscles to maintain or to correct balance. Both static and dynamic stabilizers provide support to the normal knee joint where static stabilizers include ligament, meniscus and joint capsule which provide stabilization to the joint. Altered response in these sensory inputs may affect balance. Proprioceptive feedback is received from the sensory receptors present in the joint to maintain knee joint position, which gets altered due to microtrauma in the aging process, which thus affects balance. In elderly, this loss of balance is correlated with increased risk of falls. So, it is important to study the correlation between static balance and knee proprioception in elderly. Purpose of the study: To understand the correlation of static balance with knee proprioception. Methodology: It was an Observational cross-sectional study in which 70 subjects were enrolled as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria, after which a written informed consent was taken. Knee proprioception error was assessed in standing position using a goniometer. Static Balance was assessed using Tandem Stance Time. Results: The study showed negative correlation between Right knee proprioception error and tandem stance time, r= -0.1207 and left knee proprioception error and tandem stance time, r= -0.1222. Conclusion: Thus, the study concluded that there is negative correlation between knee proprioception error and static balance, i.e. lesser the knee proprioception error better is the static balance.
Background: Shoulder joint is a complex joint producing wide range of motion. Joint receptors present in the capsule, ligaments transmit information about status of joint to the Central nervous system. Integrity of mechanoreceptors and CNS pathways play an important role to meet mobility and stability requirements. Receptors function to protect the joint from damage incurred by going in pathologic range of motion. Application of cryotherapy is common after acute shoulder injury as a part of rehabilitation. It is essential to study the effect of cryotherapy on functional performance of the shoulder joint and also to understand the safe recovery time post cryotherapy so as to return the subject back to activity.Materials and Methods: 50 healthy subjects (n=25 males n=25 females) were assessed using Functional Throwing Performance Index (FTPI) where the subject was told to throw the ball in a target at a measured distance using their dominant side. Then subject was given cryotherapy for 20 minutes followed by which the subject was reassessed immediately post cryotherapy, after 3min, 5min, 10min and 15min. Conclusion:The study suggested that functional performance of shoulder, is affected post cryotherapy till 5min, and recovers to pre values by 10min.
Introduction: Addiction is defined as a psychological or physiological dependence on a substance or habit that is beyond one’s control. Nicotine is the most widely consumed psychotropic drugs worldwide. The common use of nicotine increases the risk of noncommunicable diseases to many folds. It’s a long-term brain disorder that promotes compulsive substance usage despite negative effects. Addiction has a wide-ranging negative impact on humans, as well as social consequences. Sudden withdrawal from any addictive medication might result in psychosomatic illness. Aim: The goal of this study was to highlight the different Ayurvedic principles that can be used to prevent and manage addiction. Materials and Methods: This article’s content is based on personal clinical experiences as well as clinical studies published in index and non-index journals that deal with drug addiction, withdrawal, and management. To acquire relevant content, Ayurvedic Samhitas with commentaries and textbooks of Ayurveda and Modern medicine are recommended. Results: The Ayurveda has ancient science which has stores of herbal, mineral or Herbo mineral medication for prevention and cure of disease including addiction and withdrawal of drugs abused. The Padansika Krama is a unique method described in Ayurveda to stop the any harmful or non-harmful substance which homologous to human being, by tapper up manner. Conclusion: In addition, symptomatic withdrawal treatment by using concern drug, medicated smoke/Dhumpana as replacement therapy, psychological counselling, Achara Rasayana, Sadvritta, and Satvavajay Chikitsa are applicable.
