Resumo Este artigo tem por tema a questão da terra e os índios na Amazônia, de meados do século XVII a meados do século XVIII. O objetivo é discutir os processos de expropriação ensejados pela conquista europeia, pensados no tempo e no espaço, e refletir como, para além desta perspectiva, é preciso entender de que maneira os índios coloniais buscaram construir espaços de autonomia por meio da agricultura. Trata-se de mostrar que, se a colonização implicou um processo de apagamento dos espaços e das práticas agrícolas indígenas, os índios conseguiram construir novas práticas ou legitimar novos espaços de produção agrícola, no interior do próprio mundo colonial.
Federal do Pará***. Resumo O objetivo deste texto é examinar duas formas de se entrar pelo sertão amazônico no período colonial: as tropas de guerra e de resgate de índios. Partimos do pressuposto de que essas tropas constituíam, desde a sua organização, um momento privilegiado de trocas e de embates, muito particular ao universo da Amazônia colonial. Mais ainda, as tropas que entravam ao sertão para escravizar não só se tornaram mecanismo fundamental de aquisição de mão-de-obra, como também permitiram a "internação" do próprio domínio português sobre o território. Resumo Durante a maior parte do século XVII, a comunicação entre o Estado do Maranhão e o Estado do Brasil foi limitada pela inexistência de um caminho estável por via terrestre. Nas últimas duas décadas desse século, os governadores do Maranhão trataram de melhorar essa comunicação com a exploração das regiões interiores e a abertura de um caminho baseado no conhecimento dos povos indígenas que ali moravam. Com esse fim, organizaram-se expedições de reconhecimento e ativaram-se diferentes estratégias para o controle do território, tais como o descimento dos indígenas e o uso da guerra justa. Este artigo estuda esses projetos a partir da documentação colonial. Leva em conta a influência dos índios na transformação das fronteiras coloniais e as motivações que os administradores tiveram para esse empreendimento, até a virada do século XVIII.
